I was appalled to think that a 100 year old lady was still driving, and especially over there on suicide alley. The last time I was in Utica, I was really shocked to see what a mismanaged mess the traffic and traffic patterns are on commercial drive. Especially near the Walmart and around the 890 interchange. I waited for several minutes and then risked life and limb to cross over westbound traffic to go east on commercial drive when leaving Carbone Dodge.
At risk of sounding discriminatory toward the elderly, I have to say that someone should be chauffeuring this lady about. No matter how healthy she may be on a normal day, she cannot possibly have the reaction time necessary to survive driving in that area, or in many places in modern day traffic.
God bless her, but I am not surprised that she had a medical problem at her age, and I am glad she was not seriously injured, and she didn't injure anyone else. I hope she is okay.

I'm not even surprised. Horrified but not surprised. Thanks goodness no one got hurt. This is par for the course. Every other day the news it reporting a 87 yo got rear ended by a 75 yo. I'm ALL for one's independence but be responsible enough to know your limits. Didn't her age hitting three digits send up a red flag at the DMV?
I have driven all over the US and I will state without reservation that the drivers in Oneida county are among the WORST I've ever seen.

families are reluctant to pull loved ones driving licenses when they know they should because as one woman told me lat week that her 88 yo mother shouldnt drive but she didnt want to get stuck driving her around retest starting at the age of 70 and every 2 years dont pas once pull the tag and keys on the spot never to be returned

My Dad was not quite eighty when we talked him into giving up his license to drive after a minor accident that could have been MUCH worse. He had tremors, his knees were shot, and his reaction time was terrible. He turned left directly in front of a pickup truck and thank God he was driving a big Chevy Caprice and the truck only struck the rear quarter, spinning him around. The driver of the pickup was uninjured also.
The children that allow their parents to drive because they are too lazy or too busy to drive them around are selfish and ignorant of the dangers of letting their parents drive. Not only are they a danger to themselves, they are a danger to children playing near a road, or other motorists and pedestrians that they might injure or kill.
My mom remained able to drive until she died, but I always did their shopping for them and we took them on trips and rides with us, so she didn't have to drive for pleasure trips. She drove mainly to doctor's appointments for her and Dad. Dad liked to grocery shop, so he always went with me to get their groceries and I drove and carried the bags in for them.
Sadly, in the case of a 100 year old person, her children may not have lived to see their mom turn 100, and she may not have anyone to drive her around. That is a possibility. Thank goodness she is in fair condition today and no others were hurt.
What a shame to end up in Simeon's parking lot and not be able to go in and enjoy some of the top notch greek goodies. It is one of my favorite places to eat.

Rod I disagree with you 100 percent the worst driving is done in Florida!!!!!! They are horrible!
Maybe Symeons will give this lady a free meal? Well Clipper my husband's great aunt who is in her high ninety's still drives!!! I told his family before she shouldn't be but they are all too scared to tell her. I don't get it. So lets not be concerned for the other drivers, and for her safety? She is a spit fire but she shouldn't be driving.

Corner, I think you hit upon the key. When you asked your grandmother not to drive, you provided her with a workable alternative and promised her rides when she needed them. No one wants to lose their independence of movement, which to most means their car. And older people do worry about how they will get to appointments or go shopping, etc.

Lucy, you should come to Tennessee if you think Florida drivers are bad. Every area has their own problems, but here we have no shoulders on most roads, everyone drives in the passing lane and passes on the right, tailgating is acceptable, rear end collisions are frequent, and turn signals could be taken off of cars because nobody uses them.
I hate the tailgaters, and I am a spiteful SOB. I have a fifth wheel trailer, but I also have a hitch on the back of my truck with a ball, that sticks out about 10 or 12 inches. If some dumbass hits me in the rear end, they are going to pay for it bigtime, and buy a new radiator and grill, even if it is just a love tap, hahaha. It also keeps them back in parking lots. They don't pull ahead until they nudge my bumper before they stop.

Corner I don't know her comings and goings we only see her once a year but his parents see her all the time. The only reason for the once a year is that she never wants company. We have to call in advance to come over. Other than that I already do running around for my grandma. She had surgery on her hip so I have been going back and forth doing her laundry and what not. I finally convinced my grandma to move into an apartment where everything is taken care and she is with other senior citizens, that was last year. It took a lot of talking to get her do agree to that. She is in her high 70's still works, and drives. She said once she is done with physical therapy she won't be driving too much. So that is good, she isn't a bad driver if she was I would convince her to get rid of her license and car. When she doesn't feel like driving I usually go to the store for her. Oh boy send me to Tennessee, I can be very aggressive! hahaha....

On the same day, a much YOUNGER woman plowed into the FedEx building up near the old airport. I would not be at all surprised to find out that the 40 year old dingbat who "confused the brake with the gas pedal" was yapping on her cell. The only reason I would want to keep the gentle centenarian off busy roads would be to protect her from such self-important twits as these Moto-Yakkers.

I don't know any personally, Corner, but I've heard there are some who feel that way when they come to the Mohawk Valley. Food for thought: where is everyone moving to?
