Holy Crap! Could it happen?
Pentagon Plans New Arm to Wage Cyberspace Wars
Published: May 28, 2009
WASHINGTON — The Pentagon plans to create a new military command for cyberspace, administration officials said Thursday, stepping up preparations by the armed forces to conduct both offensive and defensive computer warfare.
The military command would complement a civilian effort to be announced by President Obama on Friday that would overhaul the way the United States safeguards its computer networks.
Mr. Obama, officials said, will announce the creation of a White House office — reporting to both the National Security Council and the National Economic Council — that will coordinate a multibillion-dollar effort to restrict access to government computers and protect systems that run the stock exchanges, clear global banking transactions and manage the air traffic control system.
I can see it now ... millions of young men drafted and marching down their respective Genesee Streets, pocket protectors proudly on display, laptops carefully packed away in their haversacks, loading on to trains at Union Station and whisked away to ... Redmond, WAshington? Where General Bill Gates in his Computer Command HQ directs the war effort. And when you buy War Bonds, the proceeds go to purchase software from India, bankrolled by Nokian Finlanders who are driving Chinese Pontiacs. (I wonder if the Chinese will bring back the Chevy Van?)
On a more serious note, but just barely, I'm beginning to feel a chilly draft from the window of Obamian concern for our safety on the web. Might the President declare a War On Web Terror? Pay for it with Web Taxes and restrict our use of the Internet "in the national interest?"
