Is everything truly about the almighty dollar? Well kudos to Mayor David Roefaro for seeing the bigger picture which includes the safety of his Civil Servants and the residents of Utica.
I guess Councilman Frank Meola has been out of town for awhile. The last person, if I remember correctly, that went after the Police Department was ousted out of the City. I think Meola just ruined any chance of getting elected for the City Comptroller seat.

Safety issues should not be negotiated or cut back. If we want our streets and lives to be protected then we have to pay for those services. That's a no-brainer. Everytime we start to make progress in those areas there is always a legislator that feels those departments should be cut. Before I see cuts in departments that are doing their jobs in keeping us safe, I want to see all our legislators take a cut in their pays.

Agreed 100% bobbbiez, and boy are they gonna want to have those Police Officers on patrol when we start losing the State Prisons due to the Governors layoffs of Correction Officers. We know longer have the staff needed to stop a serious riot from happening.

Yeah Todd, I know the cuts that have been made already. My son is doing nothing but double shifts now. Just doesn't make any sense. They're cutting back to supposedly save money but yet willing to pay out all that over-time because of lack in staffing. What the hell are they doing and who are they trying to fool? Idiots! All of them!

This Meola should have been around when Hanna was in office. He would have had at least ONE supporter. Hanna butchered the fire department, and it took a few years to rebuild it and make it a functional and viable department again.
Todd, my sympathy is with you and your brother officers. I have been inside the prison in Rome while driving a bus for Birnie Bus years ago. I have said in the past, that the medium security prisons and the dormitory living, is much more dangerous to the officers than a max facility or facility with cell blocks. You guys have more guts than I do. I would not even think about walking the yard with these guys lifting 3 and 4 hundred pounds of free weights under their little pavilion.

unfortuanately the point everyon is missing is the overtime by union contract especially in the fire dept goes to the most sr officers / firemen who use it to boost their retirement benefit the yopunger guys who are out patrolling everyday or fighting the fires dont see any of it...it has been for years a gimmick used to boost retirement stipends. im not saying cut out the ot but serouisly look at who gets it the guys on the line or the administration in the offices?

So, Meola wants to cut services? Obviously he doesn't live in the center of the city where I live. He would run screaming into the nearest closet and barracade himself in there. Remember a while back we talked about Clinton Place becoming the new James street? Well, I have been in this apt many years and last nite was the absolute worst I have seen. At 8 PM the filth parade began, these are the cars with the big radios that blast sickening loud gangsta Rap at all hours. This went on for about three hours with each car trying to out do the other. About 11 o' clock a gang of teenage girls pushing their babies in carriages had a screaming fight on the corner. In beteween that there were the motorcycles with loud illegal tail pipes, at least two fights, a mentally ill man screaming obscenities to no one in particular, a dog fight and a bottle smashing episode. It all quieted down about 3 AM. How do I know all this? It's all happening right under my window in real time. Because tonight is hot and it's the weekend, I expect there will be a hell of noise and crime staring in about two hours. Mr. Meola, welcome to the real world. We don't live like you behind closed doors. My vote counts and I won't be casting one for you.

I believe the city's estimate of the total long-term costs of the existing pension plans is due later this month or in early June. I've heard figures of $60 million+, but that doesn't take into account the effects of inflation or the common practice of overtime spiking used to pump of benefits.
I suspect that much of the current discussion of overtime is battlespace preparation, so to speak, for when the actual numbers come out.

I heard the UPD arrested Ronald McDonald. Apparently he was caught playing with Wendy's Buns.

Old Ronald has always made me uneasy. He just has that look of a deviant perv. I have often wondered about a guy that dresses weird and sits on a bench in the play area 24/7.
Does this development mean that he will show up on the sex offenders warning site when we check to see what offenders are living near us? We have a McDonalds just up the road about 2 miles.
