Today was about the tenth time that I have seen men using the front door of what was the Oneida National Bank as a urinal. Usually they use the building next to Grace Church. Guess they found Jesus. ANd what can be done to stop some young mothers from changing there babies diapers in the doentown CENTRO shelters and not throwing them in the garbage cans I guess they are to far apart to walk. And the Food Bank has to be moved away from downtown. It is not helping to cast a better future on the area. ANd someone needs to check the legality of accepting filthy used mattresses and then giving them out to the poor. I would not let my dog lie on them.

Not for nothing, but the downfall of Downtown started when the old Loretto Center moved into Hotel Utica.
That and the social de-evolution of society started.

The Loretto agreeably didn't help any but the city I think was lost way before them.

Not to condone peeing in doorways, but with downtown being as deserted as it is, or at least devoid of the old hustle and bustle of years gone by, where WOULD one readily find a rest room to use, especially if it were after normal business hours? Most downtown businesses have restrooms for customers only, and it is doubtful that even the rest rooms in the first floor of the Radisson would be accessible to anyone obviously not a hotel guest or restaurant customer.
There used to be public rest rooms on Elizabeth St. They were underground, if my memory serves me right. It seems that I went down a few stairs to get there, and my grandmother would wait on the sidewalk by the door.
I suppose that such a place in today's troubled times would be a place inhabited by deviates and sexual predators, or would be graffiti covered and vandalized.

I can't remember the year, perhaps it was in the late 1970's or early 80's, but I was driving down Genesee St. below Hopper for the first time in many years. When I got to Bleecker, I had to stop and wonder if this was a holiday, but even on Sundays and the 4th of July there had been more people on the Busy Corner than on this day years later. "What happened?" I asked my brother later in the afternoon. "Everyone goes to the shopping centers outside the city now," he said. "But that's hasn't completely destroyed the downtown in other cities," I said. "Eddie Hanna," he said "Why him?" "Hanna," said my brother, "welcomed all those nuts from Marcy when they let 'em out." "Whaddaya mean?" I asked. "Hizzoner thought that as long as nothing was going on downtown after the stores left, we might as well fill 'er up with people who could entertain you by pissing in the doorways."
I had heard the State decided to "mainstream" previously imprisoned patients for their own good. And, by the way, save lots of money.
Was my brother right? (If so, I'll be sure to tell him, although I seldom do.)

I don't know if he is completely right, but it damn sure did nothing to ENHANCE downtown.

I had heard the State decided to "mainstream" previously imprisoned patients for their own good. And, by the way, save lots of money. Everyone in Utica complained about the cost of maintaining the State Hospital, and all the money they had to pay in taxes. Who ever heard of a McDonald's folding, except in Utica. The former State Hospital inmates would go there, buy a cup of coffee (maybe) and bum cigarettes the rest of the day, and occupy all the seats.

Hehehe....... I remember that very well Jon. When I worked for Oneida Nation Bank we used to stroll over there for lunch every now and then. Sure was a detriment to the customers.

A friend of mine used to run the Highland Tower restaurant. She had to keep the sugar behind the counter or else the state patients would eat it, or pour a half a cup of it in their coffee. Same thing with ketchup and jelly. She could not leave it on the tables.
I remember the McDonald's closing because of the patients from Lorretto. You are right. I NEVER had seen a McDonald's fail before or since.

Sugar can be contraband for some patients. So they steal it when in restaurants. My father craved sugar when he was in the nursing home. When I took him out to eat ... not often, given his condition ... he'd empty the bowl of sugar packs into his jacket pocket. He'd have this big grin on his face, like a heroin addict who just scored.

My Mom did the same. It's not like she couldn't afford to buy the packs herself. I think with my Mom, it had something to do with getting over on someone. ;D I hope I'm not my Mother's daughter with that. So far so good.

That is the same reason why the City Center in the Hartza building closed. All the people from the three downtown loft apartment building spent there day there bumming off everyone.( The reason why I used the term 'loft apartments' is that is what i hear people on the bus calling them in response to the Mayors idea of building loft apartments--we already got them
And today on the corner of Genesse and Bleecker there was a leftover drunk from St Patrick's day singing to everyone. I was going to take him to one of the downtown eateries to get him something to eat but with my luck the police would have been called.

I had a cup of coffee last night with Bobbbiez's mother. She looks a lot like Bobbbiez, but she was busy stuffing her pockets while she cleaned Dunkin Donuts on Schuyler St. out of sugar packs last night,.

lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was my Mother's daughter in that sense last night which I hoped I'd never become, but in my defense, I had already touched the packets and didn't want to possibly spread the swine flu so I took them home. ;D Frankie, YOU BIG MOUTH! ;D
