I must have been about sixteen years old when "West Side Story" debuted in Utica movie theaters. I saw it twice. The first time with my parents, and I can't imagine how that came about, given my age. Mom must have bribed me.
The second time I took a girl, one of those creatures I had discovered only a few years before, but who have intrigued me ever since. Even then, it was easy for me to slip into my favorite role of seasoned know-it-all.
As we got off the North Utica bus at Bleecker and Genesee, my date asked, "What's a Puerto Rican?" "They live in New York City and make the pizzas," I said. "Those are Italians," she said. "No, not in New York." She thought for a moment. "Why would anyone make a movie about them?" "Because," I answered, "they all live on fire escapes and sing and dance out there." "They live there year 'round?" she said. "Sure... I guess they're servants ... and it never snows in the City."
Here's one of the later casts from the musical, doing my favorite number from the show, "(Everything Free In) America!" They sure look more Puerto Rican than the actors in the movie, who more resembled the Brady Bunch.

I was wondering if inmates in prison are given the flu shot. I remember a case many years ago of an inmate in Texas that was automatically given the vaccine on the same date of his execution. I thought that strange.

28 month old baby girl in Texas is dead from swine flu. The number is now up to 70 infected people. People are stocking up on tamiflu.

Whatever I had, it has passed. Maybe it was love.
Not to worry, Bobbbiez. Oligarchs are not my type.

There is an article on today's Utica Daily News page, saying that 13000 people have died since January from the ordinary, run of the mill, seasonal flu, and that those figures are not unusually high, based on data gathered.
Although there IS reason for concern, and reason to take precautions, in my opinion there is NO reason to put the country into panic and paranoia mode at this point in time.

Dave in ref to your Westside Story post...I saw the dancers on GMA and I believe they are all PR's. Your story reminds me of when I was very small, probably about 7 or 8 yo and I saw my first black person walking down Mohawk St. I remember my friend telling me it was a "chocolate baby" and if I didn't believe them then to ask them which I did. They started to chase me but I managed to get away. Something I will never forget....LOL
Also since yesterday I am feeling achey and my throat is sore.....wondering if I got the Swine Flu but so far haven't started to "oink". I do hope its just a summer cold/flu. If I disappear, think of me fondly always. ;D

Highlights below from the Utica Daily News story Clipper referred to. Most deaths from flu occur in people who have other medical complications, but health workers are worried because that seems less true for the Swine Flu.
For the full story, click at the bottom of this post, if you can stand that awful Hobika Law Firm ad that "graces" their front page. Normal seasonal flu kills thousands annually04/29/2009 11:40:00 am Staff Reports ATLANTA, April 29 (UPI) -- There has been only one U.S swine flu fatality so far, but since January more than 13,000 people have died of complications from seasonal flu, officials said. Worldwide annual death from seasonal flu is estimated between 250,000 and 500,000, the CDC report said.uticadailynews.com/utica_daily_focus/4725-Normal-seasonal-flu-kills-thousands-annually.html
