Today I heard talks between N. Syracuse and their county are considering merging their police departments and Whitesbore is considering merging their fire department with four of their village departments and in the near future their police departments also. Now, my question is, why waste time considering these consolidations and go right to studying and considering all townships and villages consolidating services with the nearest city? Seems to me, that is the road all will have to eventually take sooner or later.

Most of the savings from consolidations would eventually come through saved salaries, I'm guessing. The other way to say that is lost jobs. It depends on who is describing it.
So it's quite an inflammatory issue. I imagine the study will try to objectively list the pros and cons, along with supporting data, so that some of the wilder speculations are put to rest. The study also allows time for the community to learn about the plan and .... from the point of view of those authorizing it ... get used to the idea. It also allows those opposed and those for the consolidation to air their opinions, to make deals and to sleep with each other ... all that stuff that goes on in your town government that Sister Mary Majority never told us about in our Civics class.

Consolidation pro: fewer government jobs reducing burden on businesses, yielding more private sector (productive) jobs
Consolidation con: encroaches on "MY" turf! Loss of community identity (which don't feed the bulldog)
“Consolidation is a bunch of baloney” -- Yorkville Mayor Bruno Petruccione

One thing I miss about the Utica area ... politicians who tell it like they feel it. One thing I don't miss about the Utica area ... politicians who can't rub two neurons together.
