There's a nearby school district that is raising this year's tax levy by 4.5%, even though they received $1.3 million in federal stimulus money, which was for the purpose of offsetting state budget cuts to school districts. In a district that size, the amount could represent a couple of hundred dollars per household. You might think the district would have lowered the tax levy with the federal money, but school officials say they instead slated the funds for improvements to education. So, how did they do that?
Well, the superintendent says they used the money to save the district's Consumer Sciences program, which she emphasizes includes coursework in international foods and parenting. And to maintain class sizes without which some classes would have "ballooned" from 22 to 25 students. And also to keep unspecified co-curricular and phys ed activities.
In other words, the district used federal money to save jobs, not to improve the children's' education. This will please the teacher corps and therefore make the administration's lives a little easier. It will also please those tireless short-lived cheerleader parents who talk up every expensive improvement for their currently enrolled children and then leave the scene when the bills come due. The district administration will no doubt hear from a few "disgruntled complainers," the kind who probably own guns, speak at citizen assemblies and are on the DHS's terrorist watch list.
These folks really don't get it.
