New Hartford Hockey 5:00 pm : Utica OD reports that NH has won regional game. Utica DN reports that NH will play today. Advantage: OD
Politics Utica DN reports that politico.com reports that the DNC is concerned about retaining the Arcuri seat in the next election. I can’t find anything about this on the Utica OD. Advantage: Utica DN, but “Oh God, has the next election cycle started already?”
DWI watch: Utica DN reports chase & crash on home page Utica OD has longer article but buried deeper Minus 1 for both for tabloid journalism
Stupid twist on possibly useful news Squirrel zaps power OD reports but gives squirrel more press than outage I can’t find this on Utica DN Advantage OD but minus .5 for not deleting comment from ladiesman217.
Editorial page OD has one, agree or disagree at least opinions are expressed DN link leads to “There were no entries found that match your criteria.”, but there was a further link to a press release that Andy Richter will be the announcer for Conan O’Brien. This is almost as hard hitting as a review of Delmonicos
News scoop un-reported by other media Dave Roefaro is back in charge at city hall after coup attempt by Angelo “UTICA, N.Y., March 4, 2009--Mayor David Roefaro is hoping to clarify concerns that many Utica residents have about increased taxes, the proposed budget and things they hear in the media. Roefaro scheduled "Tax Talks" throughout the city, so he can speak to groups about these issues.” Reported only in the DN. My theory is that the Acting Chief of the Utica Praetorian Guards (UPG) was aroused from a cigar & donut induced stupor to restore “Da Mayor” to his lawfully elected position.
6pm update NY Mills wins boys Section III basketball. OD has report, DN does not. Sorry but a real news site has to work weekends.

Excellent critiques Clarence. Have you ever thought about giving Gene Shallot a run for his money and doing movie reviews?? LOL
I am finding that the daily news site is a little slow on the uptake on the weekend, but then again, so is the OD. The OD has a reporter on duty in the news room all weekend, but then again, not much happens IN THE NEWSROOM. You sometimes have to get off your ass and drive around the area to properly cover the news, lol.

Nah, then I'd have to watch movies that someone else wanted me to watch. Although in 1974 people thaoght I looked like Gene. after that it was Jerry Garcia and now Arlo Guthrie.
I always thought I could double for Tom Selleck which greatly amuses my wife.

I could definitely see the resemblance when I saw you at Christmas time. Maybe he is a little taller, LOL. I think I look like Ryan Seacrest, and sing like Andrea Boccelli, LOL.

And Robert Redford and I looked alike when we were younger ... when I made my First Communion. Editorial page OD has one, agree or disagree at least opinions are expressed DN link leads to “There were no entries found that match your criteria.” Who needs editorials? I look at them as the right of the newspaper's owner to state his opinion. I don't see them as a service to readers, unless they provide useful information. Who cares what the newspaper thinks? Who can't guess, most of the time?

I agree, Dave. One does not need editorials to figure out a paper's position on a particular issue. Look at the disgrace's lack of scrutiny over new hartford politics versus utica politics...

I have to agree that the editorial page is for the paper to state their views on any given subject. Hell, try to get a letter published in the disgrace if it doesn't agree with their take on any issue.
Gee Dave, I thought you looked kinda like David Hasselhoff when we saw you last and of course he is almost as handsome as David Griffin, after having some plastic surgeon alter his appearance several times, lol.

I am actually very excited about this new site. I'm sure they are just getting started, so some things will take some time to get going. But this looks like a great site and Keeler is running it, so it's sure to be a hard hitting source for news. I'm very excited and posted a link on my front page of the website.

Different tastes, I guess.
The editorial & opinion page or section has always been my favorite part of any newspaper.
Not necessarily the local editorial, but the variety of columnists & letters to the editor. I enjoy reading the thoughts of someone with whom I disagree, sometimes I even learn something. Often I have to review my own position to determine why I disagree.

Further thoughts right after I hit send.
One problem with I have with most on-line versions of newspapers is that they don't carry the sindicated features of the print versions; legal, contractual & economic considerations I guess.
Drudge has a pretty good listing of links to columnists & the comic sindicators have their own web sites but I have never built myself a good set of bookmarke for them.
I just realized that what I really want is a "Do it Yourself" newspaper. Someone should have a website for that. Make it downloadable to my SONY Reader & I'm set.

I'm all for that, clarence. I find myself skimming through the news to get to the editorial opinions. Uh, but I usually start with Bob the Squirrel. I too read opinions with which I disagree. I troll discussion forums looking for disagreement. Some of my strongest opinions have been shaped in the forge of debate and hardened on the anvil of disagreement. I am willling to be convinced that perhaps I am wrong. When I'm not reading or trolling, I scroll through CNN, Fox News, MSNBC. CNBC, Fox Business and the three CSPANs. (Time-Warner recently added some new HD channels and the news babes look even better in high-def ) The contrast of various slants on top news stories is quite striking and it's what I really look for. However, I must admit Keith Olbermann is nearly unwatchable for me. I'm almost always up for an argument.

I suppose I might have have looked thus years ago from time to time. Hahahahaha!

Agree, but my comment was in regard to the local editorial of just about any paper I've ever read around the state To me they are never edgy, sometimes fawning, always predictable. Sometimes in sarcasm, I put down the paper I'm reading and announce to Mrs. Dave, "Look, dear, the editors are solidly in favor of traffic lights!"

Looking over the UticaDailyNews this afternoon, I notice the writing is not as good as the OD's. Disappointingly, it's more like that of WKTV's online news.
I'm not trying to play English teacher... I would make a poor one! But I think a fair comparison of the on-line news outlets in Utica should point out the deficits of each.
The first 4 local stories I read all had one clunker or another.
"Break" instead of "brake in the "car through the window" story.
"The fire was located on a narrow strip of land that was approximately 200 yards long and between two ponds. " The strip of land still IS 200 yards long.
"The remote area was not accessible to fire apparatus or allow the use of fire hoses." An additional verb would help, or a rearrangement.
"Firefighters had to approach the scene from RT. 12 northbound, where they parked on the eastbound lane Rt. 790, just west of the North Utica exit." Huh?
"Angel C. Lopez, 25, a patient at the facility, attempted to steal more than $1,000 in cash through the card at an ATM and through Western Union, police said." Clunky use of "through."
"Lopez was arraigned in New York Mills court and committed to the Oneida County jail on $5,000 bail." In lieu of bail?
