dan for president!
re: hunkering down, protecting your own assets, making better personal decisions
Question: what is a suitable mix between bird shot and slug loads for my shotguns?

Dan: Well, yes, there's the scenario of plain old personal responsibility, as there must always be for any successful person. A potential problem with that vision is you may get lonely in your ruggedly individualistic lifestyle, since many of your fellow survivors rather than join you will still be looking for handouts at the public trough. Given a potential economic wasting of the Valley, one could simply make a plan to live off the land or open an ice cream stand. Not sure these are practical endeavors, since politicians will still be around collecting ungodly high taxes to pay their relatives for nonsense jobs.
I guess I was thinking about what could be done as public works. What should we as a people be doing together to get ready for the next era? Probably some of it is in the works, some may be already planned by government.

I know I seem to write in the prose of the survivalist but my intention this time was supposed to be less "trap your own food and clothing" and more maintaining your assets through having a clear concise plan, with the understanding that assholes WILL be elected, regardless of how many Larry's we vote for. I understand that one plan will not work for everyone, but things like not buying that big screen TV, no matter how good the deal is may make sense. Minimizing credit purchases should also be considered, and the ones that are necessities should be put on your lowest interest cards, not the most convenient ones. If the orgasm of spending comes out of Washington like I think it will the outcome I see is an upward spiral of inflation around the end of this year, caused by the need to print the ungodly amount of paper necessary to cover the bills. Inflation coupled with an already fragile economy and a jittery population will cause the economy to further stall like a piper cub going vertical. In a state of panic for their jobs you may see some entities in Government actually do the right thing, but by then it will be too late to stop the slide, only minimize it. I'm just saying we all need to reassess our priorities and not bank on the Government (pun intended) to get us out of this.

Very apropos pun, too. Dan, we're on the same page. I just keep wondering off onto the margins, wondering what can be done as a group of citizens. I think our views of the inevitable are quite similar.
I won't be trapping, either, but I will be doing many of the things you suggest. I already do, actually.

For many in Rome, it's a lot easier to file for unemployment than it is to pass the mandatory drug screening!
Besides, if you have a job you are expected to show up EVERY day, FIVE days a week! What a drag.
