Dear Ms. DePerno:
When you were elected, your primary issue was to take down the online records forum, rather than systematically redact any private information, e.g. social security numbers.
Since then, you have been working on putting something online, but only giving your campaign contributors direct access without charging them fees.
The current system you have in place that is open to the public online is a joke and complete and utter waste of time! The system is not user friendly (I assume by intentional design), and the information that one can retrieve is not very useful!
In the disgrace we call a newspaper, you declared that you were forming a committee to study the feasibility of putting these public records online.
Why have you not consulted with other counties? For example, if you visit the Broome County Clerk's Office webpage you will note how easy it is to search for vital information. Today, I used the website to help verify an abusive father still lived in Broome County so that I can file a Writ of Habeas Corpus against him and have a successful shot at having him return the child to Broome County, where she belongs.
This website even has the actual document image viewable. However, to obtain a copy, you much purchase one. I have 80+ caseload and do not have the time to travel to the clerk's office for every case. Now, I can do it over the Internet.
Imagine how much more difficult it would have been had I had to travel to the clerk's office.
Why do you refuse to do something that would be of great service to the general public? What do you stand to gain from refusing to allow this information to be transmitted over the Internet? The arguments you have presented thus far are a joke! These are public documents and the "private" information is easily obtainable from the facility. So the concerns you have are moot, unless you plan on shutting down the County Clerk's Office to redact the "private" information from the deeds there too!
Thank you, my venting is done. I just can't believe how stone-age the county prefers to run things.
