Feds: No Indian land transfer without advance noticeALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The federal government says it won't take any more surplus military land into trust for the Oneida Indian Nation without advance notice. A federal court conference scheduled for Wednesday was canceled after the agreement was reached late Tuesday. The state and Madison and Oneida counties went to court after the General Services Administration turned over 18 acres of land in Verona to the federal Department of Interior. Interior is holding the land in trust for the Oneidas. It's the first Indian trust land in New York. State and county officials say they wanted to make sure additional land isn't transferred to trust without their knowledge. The GSA says it will notify a judge and state and local officials at least 60 days before transferring any land. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. It was part of original reservation land. The air force had used the 18 acres for testing and no longer needed the land. They decided to give it to the DOI to hold in trust for OIN. If it was settlement of some sort, it would probably have been publicized by OIN. I'm shocked uce didn't catch it until long after the fact. Kinda kills their argument that there is no precedent in nys for putting land into trust for indian tribes.

upstate citizens for equality. It's an anti-Indian organization. Their president, david vickers, is an attorney. In speaking about the Oneidas when the state courts found the tribal-state compact unconstitutional, though the federal courts and federal agencies believe otherwise, vickers is quoted with saying, "you can't just shoot these people, so we have to try and to everything legally to stop them." It shocked even the radio host who felt compelled to try and lead vickers away from that position. The fact remains he said it, and he said it proudly. There was no mistaking that he really believed that the Oneidas should be shot. They don't fully grasp the situation and like to ignore certain facts, like the US Sup Ct directing the Oneidas to use the land-trust mechanism to accomplish their goal, despite recognizing the fact that NYS violated federal law (treaties and the Indian Trade Act) when it acquired the original reservation land from the Oneidas for pennies. At one time, I supported uce's position. Then, I decided to do my own research and verify their arguments. It was eye opening to say the least.

Upstate Citizens for EQUALITY ...
It is to laugh.
The name must have been created by the same guy who writes the names of Congressional bills. Like the Employee Free Choice bill that would actually accomplish the opposite result that its name implies.
