Apparently the talks they were having failed so the plant is closing.

Workers voted to reject management's contract offer.
What a country! People can vote themselves out of work and still be eligible for unemployment insurance?

All the more reason to let the automakers go bankrupt and start over without the constraints of being held hostage by the unions. Unions have a purpose, and IT IS NOT TO PUT EMPLOYERS OUT OF BUSINESS!Wake up dummies!

Well, what else should a union do when they reach a bargaining impasse with management. Give up? That strategy would have never resulted in any worker benefits.
So, the union votes to strike and the company says, "we'll shut down." See who blinks. If the company had wanted to close up and leave the area, they would have done so long ago with no care about the employees. Maybe that's their strategy, anyway.

I understand the company wants to cut wages in anticipation of a poor sales year. The union is not surprisingly suspicious (ever hear of executive salaries and bonuses, no matter what this years fiscal results?) and even wants the company to make new investments in the plant, an aging factory with outdated equipment.
Interesting fight.
