Funny Car Event
Set For Dragway
VERNON - The Bob Banning racing team of Tom Sneden and Dave Reitz from Hyattsville, Md., lead a list of the eight fastest funny cars in the East which will perform Saturday night at Utica-Rome Dragway.
Sneden is the driver while Reitz builds the motors that have taken the 2,000-pound green monster to 7.04-second clockings at 211 miles-per-hour on a quarter-mile strip.
The Hill Brothers' Plymouth Barracuda winner at ESTA park on Sunday will try to repeat its performance at the 1/2-mile strip at Utica-Rome. The event has also drawn Pee Wallace's 'The Virginin," a Plymouth Barracuda, Frank Federci's "The Shark", a Corvette Chevrolet; Bob Cain's "Hurri-Cain", a Plymouth Barracuda from Wilmington, Mass., and Sam Miller's '72 Mustang.
Making area appearances for the first time are Joe Jocono's "Brief Encounter" and Jim Fox's "Frantic Ford".
The Thundershowers came midway through the show last Saturday night and the double eliminator payoff will be held, plus a regular eliminator show.
Gates open at 4 with eliminations beginning at 7 p.m.

If I remember right, The Shark Funny Car ended up in pieces that night.... lot's of pieces. I think somebody in the stands got hit with some body pieces too.

For those drag fans who have never seen the Custom Body Mini-Challenger make a quarter-mile pass, last weeks special four-car match race proved to be one of the most exciting meets held at ESTA Safety Park in history. Even for those of us who have had the privilege of seeing this car in action, this day had a special meaning.
As it happened, the Utica-based funny car had just returned from York Pa., where driver Tom Prock guided the pulasti-car to an impressive win at the Super Stock Nationals over many of the nation's most outstanding vehicles. The CB crew wasted no time in packing up the car and gear for their trek back home where they were to make ready for the race at ESTA the next day.

The weather at ESTA looked dismal for any kind of of racing, but as it turned out the sun finally came through and the track started to dry to respectable conditions. All four of the Funny's made it safely to the track and the crews were all working like crazy to prepare the vehicles of the three-round match. The showman Charger, the Bobby Rowe "Wonder Wagon," and the David Ray "Burkhart Vega," were ready for the first round of eliminations but the Prock entry was in pieces. The right head was off as was the blower, header and various other parts. After everything was checked out and put back together, the race finally got under way.
In the end, the Mini-Challenger proved to be the best in the field that day as the "Utica Flash" had recorded a new elapsed time record for the track with a second round clocking of 6.50 and a third round of 5.59 seconds at a top speed of 219 mph.
The Custom Body team has added another record to their already large list of of track e t brakes for this year and it is no doubt that it will garner many more before 1973 season draws to an close. The car has potential and the team has the ability to break the bad luck that has been following them along the national meet circuit so it happened at the NHRA World Finals in 1971 and it could happen again.

THE SCHEDULE of drag events for this month looks like this: the ESTA Safety Park will hold their annual Summer Championships today at the Cicero quarter-mile and will feature an increased money and doubled points layout to the top finishers of the six eliminator categories.
Next Saturday at the Utica-Rome Dragway there will be the regular drag show plus an extra attraction with the double A-Fuel Dragster of Tommy Ivo who will be making his second appearance of the season at the Vernon eighth-mile strip. He will be one half of a best out of three match race with someone who will be announced later this week.
The third annual NHRA Grande nationals-Molsons is taking place today at the super b Sanair Dragstrip located in Montreal, Canada. This is the fifth of eight NHRA national events for the 1973 calendar year and this event is paying out over $160,000.
Many of the nations top drag cyclists are expected to participate in the Northern Nationals of the AMA AMDRA American Motorcycle Association American Motorcycle Drag Racing Association to be heald at Great Lakes Dragway in Union Grove, Wisconsin on August 11-12. There will be a cash purse of $6,000 plus contingencies up for grabs for these wild drag machines.

Also on Aug. 11-12 the division four World Championship Series will take place at Albuquerque Dragway in Albuquerque, N.M. This race will be the second to last on the five race series which will find the top point winners eligible to participate in the NHRA World Finals to be held on October 5-7 in Amarillo, Texas where the world championship of drag racing will crown it's new kings for the year.
The following weekend of Aug 18-19 will feature three WCS meets. Division Six will hold it regional event at Mission Raceway in Mission City, B.C., Canada and Bonneville Raceway will host the Division Seven program in Salt Lake City, Utah. The third division meet will be our own Division One points race and will be held at Pittsburgh International Dragway.

The 1973 Gatornationals champion Herm Peterson was involved in a serious crash in his top Fuel car several weeks ago at Orange County Raceway. The incident occurred as a result of a sheared axle and sent the car into the guardrail then landing upside down and bursting the fuel tank. Herm received second and third degree burns but his condition is listed as stable at the Orange County Medical Burn Center. Hope to see the "Northwest Terror" back in a new Heidleburg entry soon.

Auto Mini-Course

In these days of city traffic congestion super highways and costly auto repairs, learning about driving safety and basic auto mechanics at a young age seems an excellent idea.
Working on this premise, St. Agnes Grammar School offered a four-week mini-course on these subjects to it's fifth through eighth grade boy classes. As for an instructor, who else but 1972 Funny Car World Drag Racing Champion Phil Castronovo of Utica.

THE WEEKLY COURSE, officially dubbed Racing and Mechanics, is according to Sister Claudette, principal, part of a series of mini-courses covering different topics.
A total of 50 boys were involved in the auto course, with Castronovo conducting back-to-back Friday sessions to a seventh and eighth grade group and fifth and sixth grade group.
According to Castronovo, who was a runner-up at Grand Nationals of Drag Racing of Ill, the first session involved instruction on how an automobile engine works, with special emphasis placed on the distributor.
The second weekly session was used for discussion of traffic safty, especially the various traffic signals and signs.
The boys received a special treat the third week when Castronovo showed movies of racing competition involving all the cars he has been associated with in his 11 years of racing.

THIS PAST FRIDAY'S final class consisted of a review of the traffic safety and signal session, with Castronovo administering a test near the conclusion of the 40-minute period.
Both groups responded quickly and accurately to most of the questions. Among the questions were: "At an intersection, which car has the right of way - one going straight ahead or one turning left?" "What does a flashing red light mean?" "What does a double solid line in the road mean?"
The pupils have been enthusiastic about the course and asked numerous questions of their teacher, especially those concerning racing. At the last session, 15 minutes of racing questions went by before Castronovo could begin discussing signals and signs with the fifth and sixth graders.
