Yeah yeah yeah sunshine. We KNOW your opinion on the issue,LOL. ;Dand we KNOW that your boys are good honest upright cops. I am happy for them, that they found homes in the city and have been happy living there. lrtill I think misinterpreted the "waiver" thing. Roefaro is looking for the power to waiver "new hires" that are not union, such as chiefs and higher office posts. THAT is NOT fair. If the cops have to live in the city, so should the chief or safety commissioner. There should be NO executive privilege in waiving a law that the voters have spoken on, period. Roefaro is no damn different than any of the other mayors we have had in recent years. He got the job, and then wants to do the same old "east Utica, backroom, crooked shit" that every mayor in recent memory has done, and it has sent the city in a downward spiral. I have to think one way to straighten out the crooked bull of hiring relatives and buddies would be to make a law that NOBODY could work to the city if they lived there. Either that, or comply with what is on the books, but make it a blanket law that covers everyone in the city's employ from the mayor to a janitor, from school teachers to mechanics at the DPW. What is fair for the goose is fair for the gander. NO exceptions, and NO waivers.

lilbump, I agree. Some people don't seem to understand that anyone prior to appointment signs a "contract" agreeing to live in the city if they want the position. Now, my boys have been on the UPD for over 20 yrs. and it's been that way long before they got on. It's not new. Won't go into qualifications because in many other post I have explained how one gets appointed, so no need to keep repeating myself. Just will state, Utica does get the most qualified candidates appointed.

Yeah, yeah, yeah Clipper and you will hear it again if needed. ;D The topic is about the wavier the Mayor wants to institute going against what the citizens of Utica voted for and that is a residency requirement for all employees including heads of departments. No where in that proposal we voted on did it state, "exempting heads of departments." In the past, many, many have complained on the hiring of someone out of the city being appointed and rightfully so. One of those was the hiring of Plyman as Utica's Chief of Police and if you go way back on this forum and the OD's forum most everyone was against that. Now, the citizens of Utica have spoken by voting in the residency requirement. It became final with that vote. No need to argue if it's right or wrong. We will fight to make sure the Mayor does not get his way. I suggest everyone who voted for the requirement and lives in the city do the same by calling their council people and the Mayor and tell them to back off of this wavier. I have no doubts that we have very well qualified people in the city of Utica who can handle any department as well as any outsider.

My God. Twenty years? Now you are making ME feel old. Holy cow. It seems like yesterday they were kids. Jeez, they must be about ready to retire and get a gravy job like Chris, haha. God, I can remember them when they were still bouncing around in the back seat of the car one day at Supergal's house on Oneida St. Oh well, I guess time flies. It was in 1996 that I had a heart cath, and Supergal's daughter was my nurse, and I can remember when she was only about 11 0r 12 when Jim died. CJ was just a teen. Do you ever see Jackie around town anywhere?
I don't understand how Roefaro can justify the waivers, now that the law has been sent to referendum and voted on? Would one not think that the revisions would be made to the law, including a waiver provision, BEFORE it went to the voters??
If he continues to attempt that kind of crap, he should be recalled, and a replacement put in office. He doesn't own the city. He doesn't even RULE the city. He is simply elected to LEAD the city, and he is not showing LEADERSHIP in doing that sort of thing, against the wishes of the voters.

I'm afraid I did misunderstand the whole waiver thng. I was thinking it was more like a grandfather clause and for everyone. I guess I'll have to do my researc and talk to my friend and get my facys straight. That doesn't change my feeling that city employees should be able to live outside the city, but if that is going to be the law then it should be enforced for everyone and should have been being enforced for lo these many years. I did not mean to question any current or future individual's capability for or dedication to the job, just that I don't think the only people capable and dedicated are those who live within city limits. If someone had lived in say Frankfort their whole lives and wanted to be part of the UPD, should they have to move to Utica? What if they just lived a mile or two outside the city line? Would that be OK? I just think it's a stupid law. I wonder if other cities have that requirement. Sorry for any ruffled feathers - I do not intend to attack anyone's family members nor question their service. I am grateful to all those who put their lives on the line for us while we are in the city of Utica or anywhere else.

lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When are you going to learn my friend? Bigger then you have tried to bust my chops and haven't succeeded. ;D I go back to my old saying, (which my kids hate hearing), "what you've got to learn I've already forgotten." Besides, I had my foot surgery today and the local is just wearing off and I'm in a real shi**y mood, so everyone here is staying clear and I have no one to vent against. Haven't talked to Jackie in a few months. Last time I called, couldn't get in touch with her and I found her at the Casino shortly after my call. Told her she should bring her blankie and pillow up there. She looked good and is doing well. You did remind me to give her a call but have to set aside a few hours to do that. Boy, can she talk! Believe me, she hasn't changed at all. As far as my boys. Don't think retirement is in the near future for either. One was going to last year but he was offered a new position at the UPD so he decided to stay on. Both love what they do, so I guess they'll be giving me lots more years to worry about them. Remember what part of the city they were raised in. They didn't get appointed because they knew someone. They both were the little boys that grew up wanting to be a police officer. Yep, very proud of both of them. They are dedicate to their work and are excellent at it. Why wouldn't I be.

lrtill, no need to apologize for ruffled feathers. Everyone on the forum has their own opinions and should be able to voice them. As far as I'm concerned it takes a lot to ruffle my feathers and I do enjoy a good debate on any subject. We all have learned something from someone else through debates. It's all good so don't worry. ;D I can't speak for everyone who lives in Utica, but I feel if someone wants to work in the city then they should be willing to pay back some taxes to those that are putting food on their tables. Plus, it is only human nature for one to take pride in the area one lives and usually gets involved in all that can improve their area. Not for one minute, do I think if someone lives in say New Hartford, will they care or do anything outside of work to help improve Utica. Those are just some of the reasons I voted for the residency requirements.

Ouchie! Foot surgery? Ewwwe! Oh well, I hope ya get feeling better real soon. In the mean time, I will take advantage of the situation. If your foot is that sore, you can't kick me in the ass, so I will just go ahead on and pick on ya, hehee. What did ya have done, heel spurs, bunions? Foot surgery is painful as hell no matter how ya go about it. Hmmmm. I have been busting on Kathy while she is down and crippled. Now I have you to pick on while YOU are crippled too. I may have to leave town when you both get back on your feet though, haha. Ya need to tell Jackie to get on here and sign up. She is a sweetheart and alot of fun. I haven't talked to her since I was at her house on Bennett St. when her and Don first got married. Heck when I was single and lived on James St, I used to go to the house on Oneida St all the time for coffee with her and Jim. I lost two good friends in just a few short weeks that year. My best friend at the time was Pete Unczur, and when he dropped dead, I was devastated. We fished and hunted together, and I spent a lot of time at the Highland Tower. When he was just going with Michelle, before they were married, she used to cook supper for Pete and I at the restaurant and just the three of us would eat supper together after she closed. It was only a few short weeks and Jim dropped dead also. It was horrible. Both in their 40's and both left kids and young widows. Both had wonderful and happy marriages too. It was a shame. Well, we are wandering again kiddo. What's new right? Haha. Oh! and on the residency thing? Shhhhh. I don't want to hear it.

Hope you get to feelin' better there Bobbbiez. Probably some forgien substance embedded in your foot from kicking all those crack dealers around the neighborhood!!!
The waiver for resident requirements was available to the Mayor(s) in previous administrations as part of the city charter when it was first enacted. Probably why they want to try for it now!
But I have to agree that other than the grandfather clause, the new law should apply to everyone. While I don't agree with the whole thing, I do agree with the idea of it, and since the voters spoke.....they should not be ignored or circumvented in such a way.
The Mayor doesn't like it, well he can pound sand then.

Geez Sunshine. I hope they find it to be nothing serious and something relatively easy to remedy. Kathy has pain in her foot, either burning or tingling or aching, all the time. It is neurological, caused by the nerve damage in her back. I hope you are okay kiddo. I would even take an ass kicking, just for the therapy it will provide you, haha. Jeez, you two have had enough doctors and testing for a lifetime. Hurry up and be well. Oh, and by the way. Since when do you stay on topic? Whaduya want to do, put ralph and the flusher out of business?

I just have to tell ya, that she is just a little thing and her legs are only long enough to keep her butt cheeks from dragging on the blacktop, so I feel fairly certain that if she gets her foot that high, it will lose it's impact before it gets there. The biggest parts of Bobbbiez are her spirit and her heart. (well maybe her mouth might fit into that category sometimes too, haha)
