We're going to a St. Patrick's Day party tonight. The people hosting the party are Italian. I'm amused. I also suspect I'll be the only person there with any Irish blood! Well, me and my son. My son is Irish and German. What a combo! :-o

Big Deal! Everybody's conquered the Irish! .......................................................................................... Except me! After 11 years of a marriage filled with abuse, excessive drinking, and lack of parental skills - I divorced my Irish husband! My only regret was marrying an Irishman to begin with - LOL!

The OD said there were 40,000 people in Utica for the parade, etc. Didn't look like 40,000 lining the streets of downtown for the parade. Maybe they were all at the casino!

I wondered about that number. Where would the reporter get it, except form the police. How DOES one estimate the size of a crowd? Anyone know?

40,000? That would be almost everyone in the city limits!

Yep.....more than 3/4 of the population of the entire city was there.
Riiiiiiiiiight! Propaganda if you ask me.

;D NOthing has EVER gotten 40,000 people out for anything in Utica except the Boilermaker! Were they giving away free beer and hotdogs? Holland Farms donuts and coffee? If not, those stats are rather suspect. LOL
I would more than likely believe that there were that many people recorded staggering around Varick St by mid afternoon, than to envision that many standing in the cold watching the parade. Did the Observer Dispatch have their usual contingent of employees with green baseball caps with a shamrock emblazoned on the front? I still have one of those caps from when I worked there.
It was race weekend here in Bristol Tn. We had over 200,000 in town for the races. I know that for a fact, as I made the mistake of staying home until the race was over and then went out. I sat at the stop sign looking at the back of a state trooper, while at least 198,942 of those people passed by, before he let me out onto the highway. LOL.

Police will use Polaroid photography to estimate crowd sizes. Take a picture from a 2nd story window, count the number of heads in a small portion, then extrapolate to estimate the whole crowd.
Maybe the reporter confused 4,000 with 40,000?

Hmmm. Does that mean that the circulation figures for the OD are more likely to be around 4.4 thousand, instead of 44,000??
