$150,000 Wardrobe for Palin May Alter Tailor-Made Image

"Sarah Palin’s wardrobe joined the ranks of symbolic political excess on Wednesday, alongside John McCain’s multiple houses and John Edwards’s $400 haircut, as Republicans expressed fear that weeks of tailoring Ms. Palin as an average “hockey mom” would fray amid revelations that the Republican Party outfitted her with expensive clothing from high-end stores."

You can certainly dress for less, but I never met a woman worth her sartorial salt who couldn't spend $150 K on herself and her large family in a high-end store. (We keep track of the retail value of clothing items given to shelters each year for tax purposes. While no where near $150K, the total is always stunning to me.) Is the Governor and vice presidential candidate supposed to look "off the rack" when meeting foreign dignataries and oil sheiks?
I've been in Saks. (Their home store is on 5th Ave., of course, but they have branches around the NY City area.) They have reasonably priced, quality clothing. Look who walks by their doors ... tourists on their way to St. Patrick's Cathedral up the street and working men and women on their way to jobs at Rockefeller Center. If Saks offered only high-end "runway" items, they'd go out of business quickly.
The thought has also occurred to me that the Palins, though certainly well-off ... and she's a Governor ... probably don't have the resources of the McCains and other aristocrats who populate the US Senate. Probably the Obamas got help with clothing and other items, too.
The Obamas are probably nice folks, unless you believe they're nefarious. (Hell, we survived the Clintons ... so far.) But I'm sure there are as many nits the press could pick with them, without help from the conservatives. Why do we see this crap played out in the media against the Republicans much more than against the Democrats?
