It DOES surprise me that they haven't gone offshore for customer service calls. So many companies have and it is SO DAMNED frustrating to be connected, only to find that the person on the other end doesn't speak much english and doesn't understand a damn word you are saying. I've read that companies have had so much trouble with the overseas call centers that they are re-evaluating the practice. Some are splitting it up so that the first part of your call goes to Bangladesh, but if there's a problem, it comes back to a native English speaker in the US.

That sounds like a durn good idea! Maybe these companies are finally catching the clue!
Next, we need to band together and shun those telephone message trees that start out with, "for English, press ONE". This is America....it's supposed to be English in the first place!

I don't disagree with you, snickers. I'll be the first to promote such a change in practice. The problem is that we do not have a national language. English is that standard by default. And back in the day when Italians, Germans, Pols, and other immigrants could not read, write, or speak English, they had no choice but to learn it if they were to survive in America. Many learned English from their children or went to night school.
Today, we play to those who cannot speak English. And I would bet that if Congress did attempt to declare English as the national language, not only would it be political suicide, the ACLU would be quick to file a dozen lawsuits to have that declared unconstitutional on first amendment grounds.

Sorry Golden BCBS is NOT next... AND yes it does matter because when it was BCBS of UTICA it was small and we only serviced this area. .NOW that we are EXCELLUS we stretch throughout the thruway... so we are fine.. I know we are.. They gave early retirement to people... Do you work at BCBS golden?

The Hartford laid off twelve people locally. Seven were underwriters and the others were trainers. Thank God it wasn't my department... The higher management is telling us that there may be more locally after the first quarter. lilbump1980 no one is safe. You just don't know what is going to happen Excellus could very well be next. Who would have thought the Hartford would get rid of twelve people three days before there big move? They are getting rid of 500 people nationwide and after the first quarter possibly 20% of there workforce nationwide. That will be thousands of jobs and you can bet that will include more local lay offs.

Yes I do realize it.. But I also think that you should not be posting company info like losing contracts. and things that happen on a forum. That is very Inappropriate.

LIlbump. I hope that you are right. I will pray for your job and Excellus to remain a viable employer without layoffs. While the economy is bad, I can't see any reason to dash your hope or foresee any ill winds blowing at Excellus, until the day comes that the situation changes or affects your employer. NOBODY's job is safe any more. I only can send best wishes for all of you who are still employed and not retired as I am. I hope you all are successful in continuing your employment.

Thank you Clipper! I dont mean to sound like a prick I just dont think people should post things that ONLY the company knows on a forum. .I apologize a head of time if anyone got mad at me. I honestly do not think we will have any lay offs here at the Utica office of Excellus. But yes you are correct I agree with you clipper that No jobs are safe, but instead of saying rumors, we should all just pray for our job security and others in this horrible economy..
