They seem to do this all the time hire a bunch of people and then lay them all off. I heard that they wanted to merge with The Hartford but the The Hartford woudn't merge with them, and I don't blame them. When will MetLife get it straight.

Lil Bump. You commented on the OD pretty much that you were safe because you work for a non for profit you are not safe! Everyone is cutting back! Profits, non for profits and retailers! You are not safe no matter what kind of business that you work in.

I just read the OD story, referenced above by lilbump. What the hell kind of news story is that? MetLife calls up the OD and tells them there will be layoffs, but they won't say how many. MetLife is simply using the newspaper to get the word out, in a manner probably calculated to avoid conversations with employees until they judge the tenor of employee reaction. Companies often do this to stage an announcement or gauge reaction or to warm the water for potential retirements. What a bunch of crap! Ya know what? If I were DDonovan, I'd tell MetLife's PR hack, "Listen Buster, we're not your company bulletin board. Call us back when you have some real numbers and some real news."

You are right lucy Met does that all the time.. They are actually hiring now.. one person commented on that story saying if they were laid off they can re apply.. Give me a break i would never re apply to someplace that just laid me off and to golden: You are right no one is safe.. However being that i work for a not for profit employer.. our ceo has halted all promotions. all new hires. and capped raises next year... They did that so they do not have to lay off.... In my companies history.. They have never laid off.. and i am 110 % positive that they will do anything in their power not too. when we had a meeting our president was asked what if we were laid off what would you offer.. he said " i have no idea, that is not even a possiblity, so i can not answer that. we havent even discussed layoffs b/c we are not going to..."
and dave i agree with you.. Donovan doesn't run real stories at all.. One's that should be run...

I'm waiting to hear from my youngest son who works for Met. He hasn't been there all that long, so I bet he will be one of the first to go. Him and his better-half are expecting in December.
Merry Christmas!

The particular office Met is laying off is their call-center, that's all.

Wow! Met has AN ENGLISH SPEAKING CALL CENTER IN THE MOHAWK VALLEY??? How obsolete is that. Why would anyone want to allow their customers to be able to hang up the phone satisfied that their problem was understood and might be addressed?
They really need to fall in line with the rest of the business world and put their call center in Delhi, Bangladesh or somewhere. People get fed up with trying to understand or be understood and hang up, and no further customer service is provided. Saves business a ton of money.

Lil Bump,
Yes they have frozen all hires promotions etc. they are also offering early retirement packages as well. But that still does not mean there will not be any layoffs. And you say that in your Company's history they have never laid off, What happened in 1995 and 2002??

My son faired just fine, than you all.
He stopped by today and told me they did away with some upper echelon admins and some trainers in his area, but the customer service people there weren't touched. And he did say that it wasn't just isolated to one particular center either.

Hell Ralph. With the economy in the shape it is in, there are probably fewer new customers, and the customer service departments aren't as busy as usual. I am glad that he still has a position. People bitch about Met Life, but they brought life to the area for quite a while when all others were moving out, they were building and leasing property and growing at the Airport and other places when others were laying off. Call centers took a lot of people off the unemployment rolls, even if they weren't real high paying jobs. I can't remember the names but there was a call center in the old Boston Store, and another on Bleecker St where the old Star's store used to be.
The outfit that was in the Boston Store, also had a large call center in Fort Madison Iowa. When I was driving a truck out of Little Falls, I used to drive by it weekly.
It DOES surprise me that they haven't gone offshore for customer service calls. So many companies have and it is SO DAMNED frustrating to be connected, only to find that the person on the other end doesn't speak much english and doesn't understand a damn word you are saying.
My last such experience was with McAfee. I called just once and now I have a different security program, just as good, and less expensive. and the customer service people speak my language.
