Yep 520 to 1610 is the AM Band, you know its that other band that most radios have , belive me just take a look at any radio. Anyways, seeing as I do not have a good shortwave radio I've been firing up my good old AM Radio and seeing what I can hear. Anyways anyone else have an interest in AM radio?

Ryan, my husband & I always listen to AM since we love talk shows (even if they are all skewed to the right). AM is very interesting at night considering all the far-away stations one can pick up. WABC (770) out of NY is great & has some wacko hosts between 6-10 at night, along with Curtis Sliwa in the morning. www.wabcradio.com/

Yes, I listen to AM at night. As a certified radio nut (since the fifth grade), I listen to anything that comes in over the air. I like to use old marine radios, because they have a special sensitivity to stations in that band, since off shore boats used to use land based AM stations to navigate (as well as Low Frequency, below 500 KHz. I have a special loop antenna on a rotor I use, but just a whip antenna should bring in the "clear channel" stations from all over. Scroll down a bit on this page for a list of the clear channel stations: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clear_channel#List_of_all_clear-channel_stationsYears ago, a clear channel station had the frequency completely to itself. Today, it has a minimum 1,000 mile protected radius.

And Curtis Sliwa isn't a wacko? Curtis Sliwa is a successful self promoter, but has no other talents that I know of. Sort of like Jesse Jackson. I've noticed lately that he is used as a threat to politicians. "You fix the downtown area problems or we'll call in Curtis and his avengers to do it." The threat usually works and the police clean up the area.

I am thinking of the right person I hope. Is he not the person that formed the vigilante group with red berets to clean up Manhattan? He was definitely weird, but effective in his mission to strike fear in the hearts of wrong doers for a while.

Yes, you have the right guy. Founder of NY City's Guardian Angels, Curtis became a gadabout and radio show talk host. Some folks eventually got tired of him, but the Angels are all to his credit. Good summary bio at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtis_SliwaI particularly liked this from the bio: "He is also a former host and participant in competitive eating events. His achievements in those events include four reigns as the world pickle-eating champion." I guess that beats Jesse Jackson.

BTW, a great aid in figuring out what you're listening to on AM radio (other than the FCC database, which is available on the Internet and very useable) is a small program called "Where's that Station?" Go here and download it: www.dobe.com/wts/It's free. Eric, the developer, is a BIG radio nut.
