My son is 6 yrs old has SSI and Medicaid, Back in may he developed a bad tooth off to the dentist we went , The dentist informed us that ethan would need a pediatric dentist that specialized in surgery because he had a really bad tooth ,Ok so we go to the said dentist who informs me he takes fidelis but not medicaid fidelis.... ?? So this proceeds to drag on for 4 months , now at this point the child has 4 abcessed teeth and the infection is spreading because no one will fix his teeth because of medicaid. we called syracuse and albany and rochester and were told that there was a 3 yr waiting list FOR A DENTIST !!!!!!!! in the meantime my son lost 10 lbs and couldnt eat was in pain because of their negligence and scott and i were trying to get him a dentist ,Guess what happened next?? CPS was on my door FOR WHAT !!!!!! the claim was that i wasnt providing him care excuse me we had been trying to do that all along but we were told medicaid didnt have to make a dentist take the insurance WHAT is WRONG with this picture We had to go thru the humiliation of CPS being here 3 times and taking pictures of our children over a bogus case .then to top it all off they did nothing to take care of his teeth I went all the way out to rochester and sat in their office until they did his teeth Then the icing on the cake to date since sept 4th my child hasnt been in kindergaten since school started because he developed a infection from the surgery and now they think he has fluid on his brain from his brain malformation. which may be caused from all this teeth crap I am so frustrated and do you think i can find a lawyer to help me NO. no legal aid, not anyone GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR any one have any advice ?? Sorry if this is a bit rambled but i am so frustrated with this area and medicaid Oh and the last thing is that we want to go to a dr in chicago that specializes in his brain malformation but medicaid wont cover it i think we need to have a benefit any ideas on this also

mamastirls, I don't know what to say. That has to be the hardest story I've read in years.
Have you been able to escalate the issue at social services. I mean, keep calling until you have a face-to-face with the commissioner. How about the department of health? Can they provide a name of a dentist who will help without demanding money up front? Have you asked for help from private organizations? Catholic Charities?

Frankcor
We have been thru it all we have been told that CPS offers family support HA thats a crock they have done nothing , Ethan has services thru CNY DSO but they dont do much other than come here once a month and thats about it they dont offer help with anything I am beyond frustrated the boys SSI is gettin cut each month because scott is working overtime well we do have to live and the 600 a month we get in SSI doesnt pay the bills
We are having to choose between oil in the oil tank or food because things are so tight and no one is helping us with the boys like they should how is it that we can get HEAP, if they decide to give it to us, WIC and SSI but not Food stamps no one can give me a clear answer on that either
Something has to give im ready to tear my hair out

The plight of you and all the other working poor in this county weighs heavy on my heart. You must insist on a face-to-face with the commissioners of social services and health. You need to hear it directly from their mouths why your son can't get treatment.

The worst part is no one wants to admit that this is a problem , I called the DA's office to see about finding out who called in the complaint and they wont help me because it is not on a criminal level but the man did say he understood my frustration ,,, THEN HELP ME DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT GGRRRRRR.. I dont get these people and i have yet to find a lawyer that is willing to listen to us or even want to talk to us this county stinks

Michelle, Have you tried the Kelbermann Center which is a part of Upstate Cerebral Palsy (UCP) I worked there years ago and they were a great bunch of people. I worked with the Autistic kids for a while and I just absolutely adored them! (most of the time)! My sister also has 3 "disabled" children and has received a ton of help from RCIL.

Sorry but Medicaid does not provide the type of dental services your son needs. Thats the way the law is writen. Maybe contact Congressman Arcuri.
Have you takes your son to the Dental Clinic on Burrstone Rd? Thats the only place for Medicaid and people who can't afford a dentist can go.
I hope that you are not tryng to live only off of your sons SSI. Do you and your husband work! You must have reached the monthly income limit for Food Stamps. You can get a voucher to use at the Utica Community Food Bank. Just go to the Food Stamp unit on the 6th floor at county building and ask for a voucher, there are no income limits.

Mamastirls, I just read in your intro that you just bought a house. That probably will make it doubly hard for you to get any assistance over & above what you're now getting, as that's quite an asset you now have.
For better or worse, they are really reigning in Medicaid funding.
Is it possible you & your husband can find a way to earn the money for your son's dentist?
And Golden is right~~RCIL may be of help in assisting you to advocate on your son's behalf. Their number is 797-4642.

Concerned Apparently medicaid does pay for his dental because they foot the bill when we finally got his teeth done in Rochester because he is on SSI their clinic is similar to burrstone rd Also why would you assume that we try to live off his SSI are you kidding ?? He doesnt even get 200 a month , My husband works as a critical care tech and he works hard like 96 hrs a week so we can survive we arent looking for a handout at all just some help to lesson the blow for all that we are paying for we go to rochester and syracuse and massachusetts for his appts so it hits the paycheck hard when we are paying for gas and lodging and food I dont expect foodstamps my point was if we can get any other county run program why isnt food stamps on the same income level thats all I meant , I dont want you to think that i am one of those people that expects someone else to always pay cuz im not and i dont want this to sound catty because that is not the tone i am taking lol but sometimes it looks that way wriiten out ya know ? I am just a very frustrated mom with 2 sick kids that is tired of dealing with shitty attitude social service workers Thanks to everyone for you comments i appreciate them Stoney I dont expect you to understand it all lol I try to write it all out and i confuse myself sometimes lol Michelle

Michelle, there is a PM(private message) feature on here. Maybe you and Stoney could communicate your points by PM where everyone doesn't read your private conversation. It allows you to converse between the two of you, and have the privacy you may seek to discuss things in depth.

Michelle, Stoney has knowledge of the contacts you will need at RCIL.
PM her and I know she will be able to help you out. If not drop me a note and I may be able to put you in touch with someone down there who can advocate for you.
HEAP will be available more this year than ever before, but you best be down there at the office when it opens in November with bells on.
If there is anyway any of us can help you , feel free to ask. There are quite a few such as Stoney and myself that have worked in the community for quite a while and can help you negotiate some of the usual pitfalls.

Just click on the little icon under your screen name, enter the screen name of the person you want to send a PM to, and enter a subject. Type away. Stoney is extremely qualified to point you in the right direction. She has a degree in that sort of work and a history of community service.
Good luck, and you guys are included in my prayers.

It has got to be hell raising two autistic children ages 2 and 6 being a stay at home mom with a new home and mortage on your hands with a husband who has to work so hard to support the family and having a wood stove that is need of repair and looking for a pellet stove and then having to deal with shitty social service workers. How in God do you do it. You must be blessed by God.
