Pollution and drugs are on a list of new mortal sins produced by the Vatican.

Others include genetic manipulation and social and economic injustice.

Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti said in an interview published by the Vatican's daily newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, that known sins increasingly manifest themselves as behaviour that damages society as a whole.

``While sin used to concern mostly the individual, today it has mainly a social resonance, due to the phenomenon of globalization,'' he said, who heads the Apostolic Penitentiary, a Vatican body that issues decisions on matters of conscience and grants absolutions.
