I just was watching the news and there is an e-mail circulating about a mountain lion being shot in Dolgeville. I guess it's a hoax. The DEC says there are no mountain lions in NY. I beg to differ. We have a friend who owns land up in Plattsburgh. It has Christmas trees on it and he went up a few weeks ago to trim them. He was trimming along, not really making any noise when he heard an animal coming through the brush. He looked up and there was a mountain lion staring at him. It was only for a second, and the cat ran off. He knows what he saw and it was a large cat with a really long tail. He went to his truck because at that point he didn't feel safe trimming trees anymore. I have relatives up near Lowville and people have reported seeing one (or more than one) near Croghan too. I wish someone could get a picture of one for proof. I think it's very interesting. I think it's possible. Nobody believed there were moose in the Adirondacks a few years ago either.

Anything is possible CG. I see no reason to think that a big cat could not have migrated from the West or the Northwest. It would only take one breeding pair to start a rebound of a population in the adirondacks or other areas.

In NYS they would have no natural predators and the food supply is ample, so I see no reason why the population wouldn't grow. The people are leaving in droves, no reason the wolves, mountain lions and elk shouldn't take the state back.

If I remember my history correctly, mountain lions roamed upstate new york, but steadily declined during the industrial revolution. I remember reading this somewhere, but my quick search through google has not been fruitful as the results are flooded with the recent stories Countrygal mentioned.

What we would be "dealing" with up here are cougars- here is a good link to a page of "experts" who lay it all out: www.easterncougarnet.org/To sum up we have a Class II Confirmation of Cougars which means that: 1) Track sets verified by a qualified professional 2)Other tangible, physical evidence verified by a qualified professional (i.e., prey carcasses, microscopic hair recognition, thin-layer chromatography of scat) Keep in mind that Mass. and Quebec are Calss I

Thanks, Ryan. Nothing like real info! I'm about 30 air miles from the Mass. border. I haven't seen any yet in the woods behind me, but I don't get out there as often any more. We've been more concerned with coyote and, in some years, bear. Not this year. Lots of rain, so the bears don't need to come down the mountain for water.
LATER: I just noticed Swimmy's post, above, was about Hillsdale, NY, not far from here.
