I actually heard this when it happened. It was about 11:20 and I was watching TV when I heard what sounded like tin cans being crumpled and then a big bang that shook my house. I live near the Nine Mile Creek, but not on top of it and it was loud! 10 minutes later the sirens started. I could see from my house the flashing lights on the bridge.

I wondered the same thing Dan. I haven't seen him on today, and I hope when it gets later around supper time, he will grace us with his presence and tell us all about it. I am sure if he wasn't there, he has communicated with those that were. Hurry up Willum!! Inquiring minds want to know!!

Do ya think it was one of those mornings like after a barn fire, when coffee beer and donuts, all three are on the breakfast menu upon return to the station?

Not necessarily in that order, but yes.

Hi gang,
Sorry I haven't been around, been a pretty busy week. And sorry to disappoint you all, I couldn't make them as I was too under the weather to make it to the fire house, let alone stay out two nights in a row.
Guys were supplied through the evening with coffee, water, sandwiches etc. by members of the ladies auxiliary.
The Nine Mile Creek accident was covered by Stittville. Maynard helped at the scene at first but was mainly brought in for traffic control along with Floyd to shut down eastbound at the Griffiss Parkway. Miraculously all injuries were non-life threatening.
An aside for Clipper, they found the truck driver "sitting" on top of the truck in the creek.
The following evening was the pedestrian one on the 291 ramp and that wasn't all night.

Maynard and Deerfield have always had active auxiliarys that did stuff like that. Verona and Lee Center, when I belonged to them were more along the lines of beer at the firehouse after the call, and in Verona, a guy named Hank that ran the Freihofer's outlet store would open up and donate a bunch of baked goodies for us to have with coffee. Once in a great while the women would make coffee and bring it to the scene.
As for the guy sitting on his truck in the middle of the creek, someone should have tossed him a fishpole, there are some nice small mouth under that bridge, LOL. He is lucky he didn't kill himself or someone else by falling asleep. With the new logbook rules, there is no excuse for falling asleep at the wheel, if you are even close to running legal. Of course a log entry is only as legal as the person with the pen. Companies push drivers to make delivery schedules, and sometimes are quite aware that the driver is doing so on little sleep and not within his legal driving hours. Been there and done that, many times over.
