I have the Humana Honor Plan for my health insurance plan. They send you a visa debit card and load a certain amount either quarterly or monthly, I don't remember which, for you to spend on personal items such as clothing, groceries and other personal needs. I also have a benefit under that plan that provides another periodic $100 for over the counter items and medical equipment.
I came across the debit card in my desk drawer yesterday and decided to call and see how much money I have on it. There was $411 on the card. They also told me that I have another $400 available for spending on the mail order catalogue OTC things.
I was really in no critical need of anything, but decided I better spend it down before the end of the year. I spent $197 on assorted meats at Sam's Club. With the cost of meat becoming more and more prohibitive every day I figure that it would be a wise purchase. I bought a package with two large chuck roasts in it, large enough to divide each into halves for small pot roasts just big enough for me. I also bought strip steaks, 3 lbs of stew meat for soups and stews, a package of 18 quarter pound Angus beef patties, a 2 lb package of Salmon filet and a package with 8 five ounce cans of solid white albacore tuna in water.
The freezer was already well stocked but what better to invest that free money in than meat for the freezer. I actually had to set up a folding table and empty and reorganize the freezer in order to get it all in. lol. I discovered 2 pork butts that weigh close to 10lbs each that I need to use up so I guess I will be making some sausage some day in the near future.
I guess in the future I need to keep better track of the program and spend it as it comes in. Especially with just me and the dog left to consume any food I would purchase with it. I probably would be well served to use some of it on clothing items and give the freezer a break, haha.
They are sending me a printed copy of the catalogue so I can order the items available with that benefit. For $400 I will probably grab all the personal hygiene items I will need for the next year or so and they have such things as back support belts, ankle braces, BP machines, glucometers, etc. This insurance costs me zero for premiums and gives me all those things. My meds come from the V.A.
I have to say that although that is a lot of meat there is a lot of comfort and security that goes along with knowing that I won't have to worry about buying any meats in the near future.
Fall weather is finally going to arrive here this coming week with temperatures dropping into the low to mid seventies and night time temps into the low forties. I will be able to get my outside work done with more comfortable temperatures.
