I was quite curious as to what it would cost to subscribe to a Life Alert system that would include a pendant to wear around my neck and would include a GPS locator. I suddenly realized that since Kathy passed away, I have no one to call 911 or anyone that would miss me if I were working outside and had a medical emergency. I rather doubted that the VA would pay for such a system but I was pleasantly surprised when I called. I just called the nurse line and explained that I now live alone and am 78yrs old with multiple medical issues.
I was surprised. She sent a note immediately over to my primary care doctor and said he would put in an order for one with no further questions asked. She said that there are many many veterans my age who have been widowed and live alone and that it is pretty much given blanket approval. That is a load off my mind. Checking pricing online I found that most of the systems charge $40 or more per month to subscribe to the service.
Once again I have to sing the praises of the VA system. Once I was granted disabled status all of my issues have been quickly approved and addressed at no cost to me. Hearing aids, Cpap and supplies, podiatry, and all my prescriptions are covered. If my rating is upgraded I will have eye care and dental added.
For many years Vietnam veterans were neglected and could not avail themselves of much medical care without red tape, copays, and BS. Our VA system here is outstanding. Our hospital and all of the clinics are great and the satellite clinics in the individual areas are convenient. Any urgent care or emergency care is covered at civilian facilities under the "community care program."
If you are a veteran and are not availing yourself of the services that you have earned and are eligible for, check out the services available in your area and get registered and enrolled.
