Cooling Centers Cooling centers are facilities where you can go to cool off during extreme heat. The New York State Department of Health collects information about seasonal cooling centers from local health departments and emergency management offices. If a cooling center is not available, libraries, supermarkets, malls, and community swimming pools are great places to stay cool. You can always check with your local health department or local news sources for possible additional cooling centers during heat events. Remember, call before you go! Cooling centers may be closed at certain times or only available during extreme heat events. The phone number and address of each cooling center is provided. Information below represents the most up to date information provided by local agencies. apps.health.ny.gov/statistics/environmental/public_health_tracking/tracker/#/CCList

I went to Hannaford's on Mohawk St today which I rarely do because of the neighborhood. I saw at least five homeless people in the plaza camped out with backpacks. One guy probably in his 50's looked in pretty bad shape. I felt bad for him so I handed him a $5 bill. Not much but at least he can grab a burger & a cold drink from McD's which is right in the plaza.

I heard they were living downtown in that building that is falling apart on Genesee St near the old YMCA which is a Veterans Center now. Some are camped out at the far side of the new apartments near Wynn Hospital. I saw a few others while traveling on Bus camped out around St Josephs/ St Patrick's Church and they could easily open a center for them what with all the building with unused rooms. They can't go to Rescue Mission because of the rules and regulations. So.........

They can't go to Rescue Mission because of the rules and regulations. So......... It's a damn shame that because of Utica politics they practically ran the YMCA out of town a few years ago. Downstairs was the gym & youth center & the top floors offered low cost room rentals for low income people. Supposedly, the renters were causing issues for others who worked & shopped downtown so the city got on YMCA's case. It was total BS. I was a Y member for a long time back then & nobody ever gave me a hard time when I went there & I never saw those people bother anybody else either. So after 100 years of the YMCA having a presense in Utica & one of the first ones to even open, they closed the doors. Typical Utica politics.
