wibx950.com/ixp/39/p/car-vandalism-wynn-hospital/It is sad state of affairs when the nurses and employees have to put their vehicles at risk while they work Welcome to downtown Utica. I understand that parking is a real nightmare at the new hospital for patients and visitors. I guess it is a problem for employees also, although they park close to the employee entrance. Sadly I predict that security in the parking areas is going to be an ongoing problem due to the fact that they insisted on building the hospital in a part of the city that is a festering boil on the butt of the inner city. The area had always been known for drugs, prostitution, and violent crime when I worked nights at the OD. Where do patients, and visitors park? I understand that they have valet parking. Where do the valets put your car and what kind of security is provided in the parking areas at night? This nurses car was in an area near the employee entrance and there is supposedly a security guard sitting at the entrance 24/7. It sounds like that security guard needs to be patrolling the parking lot, or they need security cameras covering the parking area and monitors for that guard to watch. Maybe they actually need more security guards to patrol and guard ALL the parking areas.

It's even more discouraging if you scan the article that follows, upstate cities with highest crime rates. The phrase "We're #1" is not always a good thing.
The politicians who forced the decision have been fired and convicted but we are still stuck with the results. At lest I haven't heard anything about bats in the OR so I guess it's an upgrade. We still have to deal with surgeons who think it's okay to use a heart valve which was dropped on the floor as long as you rinse it off.

I will never understand why it wasn't built at the St Lukes campus. If I remember correctly there is a significant amount of empty land between St. Lukes and House of Good Shepard.
Politics ruled the day. I think we could safely assume that some personal deals were made that favored those political figures involved and were of little to no benefit to the taxpaying public.

The location decision was pure politics. The hospital board was told what to decide if they wanted the money and they voted accordingly. As local user we can't really complain about what we got using mostly other people's money.

It is, or will be a great facility when any bugs are worked out. I am sure that it had all the latest technology either built in or anticipated and accommodations made in drawing the construction plans.
I think that the latest scandal with the open heart surgery doctors is pretty shocking and one has to wonder how long it went on at the old hospitals before the move and how many died as a result . I hope that they are able to attract highly skilled staff. Utica probably isn't right at the top of any doctor's list of places to practice and to have his family reside.

They can have all the latest high tech equipment that money can buy but if the Dr's are incompetent nothing will change. The best Dr's are going to places like Boston, Cleveland etc where the majority of patients or a good percentage of them aren't receiving heathcare thru Medicaid, Medicare etc with lousy payment schedules which is the situation in this area. If you enter the St. Luke's campus from Burrstone Rd you will see acres of empty land where the new hospital could have been built with the St. Luke's rehab facility a stone's throw from the hospital.

as a quick aside from THE hospital stuff I need to see a GI Dr for a consult. About 2 months ago I asked my NP for a referral. Time went by and no referral. I was told by the clinic that they were "checking my insurance" and would make the referral soon. More time passed and despite several phone calls, still no referral. Last week I went to see my NP and at the end of the visit she never mentioned my referral, so I asked her when it was going to happen: She told me: We can't make a GI consult for you because "there are no GI doctors in Utica." I was taken aback. I questioned her again: "Well, what about all the doctors at the Business Park? Where did they all go?" Answer, unbelivable but true as I tell it: "We don't know but they are not there". My jaw is on the floor. I asked for the clinician to come in. She told me the same thing!!! "All the GI doctors in Utica have moved away!! Patients have to go to Syracuse or Albany for treatment.!" Bullshit I muttered. ?? I went home and simply picked up the phone and called the local GI clinic in the Business Park and they referred me a doctor in Rome and bingo, just like that I have an appt. BTW: I am changing clinics. People: Stay away from Upstate Family Health Center on Noyes Street. It is a dangerous place to try and be cared for.

Definitely sounds like time to change your primary care.

Sad to see him leaving the Slocum Dixon position, but happy for all of the area if he is going to enrich the cardiac programs at Wynn. I assume that they must be on the hunt for a surgeon that is qualified to do the bypass surgeries and other open heart procedures and will soon be able to fill out the team and achieve excellence in the cardiac area.
You have my sympathy if you are now going to be forced to go to Wynn for your care. I guess that you won't be affected by the parking debacle and t he bus will probably drop you at the door.

BTU: I agree totally. I have had bronchitas and been very ill for the past month. When I get my strength back I am going to change clinics. I have had ongoing problems there for the past year with providers; too much too tell now. My last provider was this Born Again anti vaxer guy who has since left; he told me I would be healthier if I prayed more. OK. And now this BS. Nope. Nope. Nope.
