Raking late falling leaves away from beds and the fence, chopping out a couple of tree stumps with a pick axe, moving a dozen cinder blocks out of the carport and stacking them in a less conspicuous place in a back corner of the yard, not visible from the road or house.
The stump removal has been a long and slow process. One stump is over 2 feet across and the other only about 12". For 2 years I have been treating them with "Stump Out" granules. I had to cut them level with the ground with the chain saw, and I then drilled holes down into the stump and poured the granules in all the many holes I drilled. I poured the granules in the holes every couple of months, followed by filling the holes with water and later with kerosene. Once the stumps were well perforated with treated holes, and soaked up well with kerosene I set it on fire last fall and it smoldered for several days. The potassium nitrate in the Stump Out rotted the wood down so that I finally could smack it with the pick axe and and break it into large chunks quite easily.
I don't really like the idea of using chemicals but a mechanical stump grinder leaves a much larger area of dirt and chips. today I put a bag or two of soil in each of the holes. tossed some seed on it and covered it with straw. We will have to see if the Stump out prevents grass from germinating. The contaminated dirt is down 10 or 12 inches from the surface
Guess who makes the Stump Out. Yep, good old Bonide Chemical Company in NY Mills.

I had to remove a stump leftover from a pine tree about 12" accross last year. It took me three hours using a chainsaw, sawzall, pickaxe etc to get it out. I couldn't burn it because it was too close to our new fence. Soon I'm going after another one from our plum tree as I'm tired of mowing around it. IF Spring ever arrives around here. We're getting rain & snow up here in God's country all this upcoming week.

We have had t wo beautiful days with temperatures in the mid to high 70s. It is 78 right now. Everything goes to hell tomorrow though with some severe weather possible tomorrow night into Wednesday. A medium risk of damaging wind gusts, power outages, and hail, quarter size or larger.
