www.larrytanoury.com/2008ProposedEmployeeRoster.pdfIf you have any knowledge of County politics, you will quickly notice a theme on this 77 page payroll of Oneida County...It's all about the family name. Just thought you would have some fun reading over this and comparing some of the politicos salaries to yours.

Wonder if they could squeeze me in there somewhere. A Snarky Response in the style of Bertolt Brecht By G. Zanzibar All you have to do is, Sign this little parchment, Sign this little parchment, It's as easy as that. No, not with that pen, sir. That ink, it will not do, sir. Our agreement, it requires, Just a bit of blood. One tiny, little prick, sir. A few, precious drops, sir. Your blood, it is your bond, sir. And with that, the deal is done.

Overall, after looking at job titles, salaries and anniversary dates, I thought for the average worker (not department heads necessarily) that the salaries were on the low side. Considering what it costs to exist these days, I highly doubt anyone is living high on the hog working for Oneida County!!

Denise, you make a good point. The problem is that the ones you are talking about are the ones that do all the actual "work" for the county. The high paying jobs are usually reserved for the politicos, and they come with many benefits - such as a sense of entitlement that the rank and file workers don't have the luxury of enjoying. My point is that it's time to start rewarding the people that do the people's work and not the politicians' dirty work. This is why one must have a deep understanding of the political roots of Oneida County in order to truly see the significance of this list.
Compare the names here to the names that show-up on the Republican financial disclosure reports at the NYS Board of Elections website. Then look a little deeper at who has contracts with the county (NFP's and private companies), who has jobs in those NFP's and companies, and who donates from those NFP's and companies. That is where the political currency comes from. It's a deep web that will take a LONG time to completely eradicate, but what better time to start than NOW. If not now, when?

Hmm... I read the list and was surprised at all the people I knew, and half of them are related or connected to my family somehow. I saw an old high school girlfriend of my son's listed on there too! I guess I shouldn't complain about Oneida County. Especially with so many 'guests' reading this board. Anyway, thus says this idiot with an opinion.

With the exception of some attorneys I didn't see many (if any) salaries over 100K. I don't think the legislators salaries are over the top. Is that what we are suppose to be looking at?
What I found most interesting about the report was the anniversary dates and how many people have been county employees for a long time, including one of my cousins who has been with the county for over 25 years.
I know what I make in the private sector, and I have to say that I feel very fortunate after reading the salaries of the Oneida County employees!!

The OC caseworkers make far above any private not-for-profits case managers/workers, & that's always been the case (no pun intended).

Does your employer provide lifetime health benefits and a fully vested pension after you contribute 3% of your gross for 10 years? I would elaborate on Gear's question by asking if your employer makes 75% of their hiring decisions based on a long-term plan to garner political power? As Rick noticed, their hands reach pretty far, and sometimes we are very surprised to find out just how far they reach. Most would say I'm crazy for raising this point, but unless someone raises it - while NOT making it personal - we will never see anything change around here. There are some WONDERFUL people, MANY of them, that work for Oneida County. Unfortunately most of them don't get the respect they deserve because they can't deliver the "political" goods. Just take a couple department heads as an example (I'll leave it up to you to pick which ones), you can NEVER tell me they earned their position. They got there because of politics and most of the time they wouldn't last a minute if not for their staff that does all the work for half the pay.

I don't know about any of that not recognizing many names on the list provided. To answer the other question. No, I won't have health benefits through my company after retirement, but yes, I will have a fully vested pension. I have always heard that the pay is absolutely lousy for county employees but the benefits are kick ass. Sometimes people have to trade one for the other.

Also, how about the scam of former county legislators that get appointed as department heads. You see, they spend 20 years on the Leg as "part-time" employees. They become vested, but their pay is only $8,000. So they get rewarded for their loyalty on the board by getting appointed department head (think DPW) with a big salary. Then when they retire after a couple years, their pension reflects their last couple years' salary, and the 20 years as "part-time" counts as "20 years" even though they were part-time. Therefore, they may only serve 3-4 years as a department head, but receive a pension based on that salary instead of the 20+ years of $8,000 part-time work.
It's a scam and YOU are paying for it. We need to start hiring people based on their knowledge and qualifications, NOT their political ties. This was one of my arguments about the appointment process at the last meeting, but of course they shut me down, telling me that "I run this meeting." That's a strong statement and one that surely shows the power trip these people are on. They have every right to disagree with me, but they have no right to gag my ability to speak on issues.

BTW - The Republican leadership (Chairman and Majority Leader) have been there for 28yrs and 18yrs. Am I the only one that thinks it's time for something different?
Since 1989 our property tax levy has raised over 100%. Our home appreciation values have DROPPED. Thousands of jobs have LEFT. Crime has RISEN. Sprawl has gotten out-of-control. We lost our biggest asset, the Water. And the list goes on. So, my point is that no matter what political spin they place on my statements, there is no doubt that what we've been doing for the past couple decades isn't working. We need to start doing things another way. Our children and future generations deserve nothing less.

Unfortunately, you're probably right. What we need is for everyone to jump in and run for office. We need a whole new slate of elected officials. I told them that, if they really want to get rid of me, I would resign...but only if they all did it with me. I know it's hard to believe, but I really don't care about my own career, I want to see a board that is completely clean of rubber stamps and politics as usual. That way, I could go out and honestly try to make a life for myself in my hometown. But, with things the way they are (as you know, Ralph), EVERYTHING around here is political. I want this area to run honestly and for the good of everyone, even if that means I'm not there.
