I will never forget the experience of sitting with my coffee when they broke in on the Today show to show us an aircraft flying into the WTC tower. It is one of those tragic things like JFK's assassination that will stay with us for life. Most people will never forget where they were or what they were doing when they first heard about it.
Kathy's cousin sent me a special flag in 2002. It is an american flag with a depiction of the NY skyline, and the pentagon in the blue field. I fly it only once a year on 9/11 in tribute to those that died.
It was a horrible day in infamy, and will go down in history along with Pearl Harbor. We must pray for our troops and support them wherever the war on terror takes them. I awake every morning with the knowledge that it could happen again. Every time we have a NASCAR race here in Bristol, it is a very real concern to security folks at the track. It was a day that destroyed the comfort and complacency of a whole country forever. We will never again be able to simply enjoy an event where masses gather, without the shadow of terrorism hanging over us.
I pray for the dead and their families, and I pray for our troops and others around that world that are fighting the fight to prevent terror world wide. Take a moment to stop an pray for those lost. I just raised the flag on our flagpole and took a moment to reflect back on that horrible day and to pray for those lost and their families.

We're already better than they are.
America will never be the same. The world will never be the same. We will make sure of it.

And if we execute them we are no better than they are. Kind of hard to kill those 10,000 Al-Quaida again. BUT.... If we execute any of them it will be under the rules set forth by the Geneva convention and or our constitution receiving the full services of a trial by a jury as specified under the rules of war. Now I'm sure that as those people falling 100's of feet to their death would have appreciated the same treatment. I'm sure the contractors strung up and decapitated on the bridge in Iraq would have appreciated the same treatment. I'm sure the kidnapped US and British soldiers tortured decapitated would have appreciated the same treatment. Kick Ass!

I don't understand that logic of sparring the terrorist any discomfort after what the people and families so unfortunately and intimately experienced. Life changes. Lives destroyed. Today is and SHOULD BE a day of reflection. It should also be a day of being thankful for the dedication of THIS Presidential administration for not allowing any more attacks of this magnitude. Denise, thank you for posting the tribute. It moved me to tears. I don't normally seek these types of things out. I was at work that morning, and the whole place shut down with everyone sitting crying and concerned in the break room glued to the television. I don't ever want my children or grandchildren to have to experience tragedy on this level (or worse). God bless those that lost loved ones.

9/11 is a day that I will never ever forget, and it is weird how you can remember that day like it was yesterday. I got to work early that day and that is when the first plane hit, then the second plane hit, when my friend got into work I was telling him what was going on and all the sudden he was freaking out (of course me not thinking) he is from the city. He was on the phone calling his parents who live up here, but the rest of his family and friends live in the city. His grandparents were going to leave the house to go vote that day, well for whatever the reason was that morning they didn't leave the house. You couldn't get your call through he didn't get a response from any family, nor friends until later on that night. It was just one of those things this can't be real I remember thinking. Then my friends were sent to war. This is still very emotional this is just one of those things that I could never ever forget. I even remember President Bush signing something about what songs can't be played on the radio during that time. I also worked 22 hours straight talking to customers, and people all over the world. My heart goes out to all the victims families and to the military.

Legally promoting death is an oxymoran. In doing so we deminish our own laws of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Ah, but "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" were gained and are protected by the taking of life. It is an unfortunate fact of life that self-protection often requires the death of an aggressor. Some of us are comfortable with that, some of us are not.

Very good Dave, Concerned, My friend, think of it as your home and family. A man enters your house, he means to harm you and your family, you have a gun. Are you going to use it? I hope you didn't turn it into the authoritys thinking there was no need for one. These people entered our home through our loose welcoming ways, they took advantage of us educating them for preperation and then, without notice with callous killed 3000 of our brothers and sisters in the most disgraceful way in cold blood. These Islomofacists have promised to attack us again and again and kill all of us and destroy this nation. They have documented clearly down at Gitmo if they got loose they would rejoin their efforts in destroying us. My feelings? Punch their ticket! Funny thing I didn't think much of any capital punishment. What turned me was the constant pass this country gave these pinheads from the Carter' fiasco to the the day GW sent in the troops to Afganistan. He promised a response and he held his promise.

And rolling over and doing nothing would bring us WHAT?
They don't want to hold hands and sing a chorus of 'Kumbaya' with us. They want to kill us. I, for one, find that attitude unacceptable.

Ahhhh………And herein lies the crux of the dilemma.
Concerned, You are right in some aspect, but keep in mind that it is human nature to defend itself, and revenge is a normal trait of higher functioning mammals……not just humans. The more intelligent (or highly evolved mentally) the greater the need for revenge…….makes you wonder if IQ is slightly overrated?
But there is the problem….....….If we kill them, they win. If they kill us, they win. If they terrify us, they win. If we pay them no mind they go back to the first option, if we keep them at bay…........…well I think you get the picture. Hell, unless we kill the last remaining fanatic over there, they win……and if you have been paying attention, they STILL win.
You have to understand the philosophy of fanaticism, whether it be political or religious, to see the whole picture. The same held true for the war in Vietnam, but in a more political/military aspect.
You cannot win when the other side refuses to lose.
And it really makes no difference whether it is Moslem fanatics or any other religious/political fanatics…….face it, the Inquisition and the Salem witch trials didn’t say a whole helluva lot for the religious community here and on the other side of the pond!!!
So what is there to do?
Despite my Buddhist/Taoist teachings, Protestant upbringing and Catholic conversion……I want to see some ass kicked and have no qualms with punching their tickets en masse. But at some point, whether it be next year or next decade, it’ll be time to bring the troops home and call it quits.
And I think it will be fitting of us Americans to follow in the footsteps of our Jewish brethren, who despite the atrocities committed upon them by the powers that were in Nazi Germany, did not set out to annihilate the entire German populace, but simply made the statement……never forget.
Concerned is quite right………..we are no better than they are. Simply different.
There will always be fanatics and despots; Kahn, Phol Pot, Stalin, Hitler, the Khmer Rouge, Jean-Claude Duvalier, etc., etc..
And even if we cannot see it in time to stop it, find those responsible and suitably punish them, or satisfy our need to seek revenge for those of our brothers and sisters that have perished……..
…………..we should never, ever………….forget.
