LOL! The M-1 and M-2 rations were not bad. The ham and lima beans came in the M-2 package. Had a southern boy named Eddie Webb would scarf up the ham and lima beans. Some of the rations were pretty decent. I like the beans and weiners, the spaghetti. Almost anything except the ham and lima beans or the M-1A tuna fish. Good old Eddie would trade his cigarettes for anything that someone else didn't like.

I still have a P-38 in my jewelry box. I carried it in my wallet for years. I don't recall ever using it but I guess I thought it would come in handy at some point. To this day I can't stand lima beans. Kathy likes them so I occasionally find them on the table and choke them down. I just put enough salt and pepper on them to cover the taste and texture.

If I still hunted I might be inclined to order MRE's. I had the Spaghetti once and a chicken and pasta dish of some sort once when I guy I worked with brought them to deer camp. He was in the national guard. They are certainly a step up from C-rats

The first year I was in Germany, I was stationed in Helmstedt on the border between East and West Germany. There were only about 75 Americans stationed there. We were all on shift work (the duty stations were manned 24/7). The mess hall was staffed by German ladies who worked only the day shift.

In order to rotate stock, the rule was that we were supposed to eat C-Rations one day per week. The German ladies refused to cook them. The mess sergeant had a system. If I worked nights and slept through breakfast, at lunch time I signed both breakfast and lunch logs. If I was at the checkpoint for day shift, there was no transportation to the mess hall for lunch so I skipped it. At dinner time I would, I would sign the lunch and dinner logs.

The same rule went for the radio guys who worked at a site that monitored East German and Russian Army radio transmissions. The result was that the mess sergeant had enough budget to buy food that we never had a C-ration day. That was fine with me. I didn't care if the C-Rats were sold on the black market to the East German Army or thrown in the dumpster as long as I could eat fresh eggs rather than powdered.

The German ladies were also very protective of "their" soldiers. If I worked the night shift, slept until 10 AM and wandered into the mess hall for a cup of coffee, somehow a plate with eggs and toast would appear next to my coffee. The hausfrau cleaning the kitchen was not about to let one of "her" soldiers go hungry.
