Rented the movie on Apple TV. I picked it cause its up for academy awards but I was bored. I guess its not type of movie I like watching. Not that it was bad but just not my type. But you never know cause sometimes its just a great movie with a great story. They are opening theaters here where you can eat and drink. Not my cup of tea. A friends boss’s son went and he hated it. Theaters are hurting so are trying things they think will work. I say lower your prices and you’ll see more people coming. I remember when the price of a ticket was .25 cents. Today you need a bank loan. How do parents afford to take or send their kids to the movie these days. I had it rented at the library but I was like 74 in line and didnt want to wait . (Which reminded me I need to cancel so I dont get charged).

We have one of those modern day cinema complexes here. I have been there once and it will most likely be the only time I will go there. $12 to get in and $10 for a bucket of popcorn. I DO have to say that it was quite comfortable. The seats are all full size recliners with cup holders. I had all I could do to stay awake for the movie.

Ah, Jayzuss, we all went to the "Ri" with our paper bags of home popped popcorn and the place was wild. After the previews of old WW2 flicks, came the cartoons. By then the kids were wild and there was no controlling them. They had one usher who had a limp, he wore a funky little hat, and his uniform made him look like an organ grinder. He carried a huge flashlight and if a kid was mouthing off he would come limping down the aisle and shine it right on you. It was kind of like a right of passage. I don't think anyone watched the movie, at the end of the show the floor was littered with all kinds of trash. I remember going there to see "20,000 Leauges under the sea" It was the first time in a movie theatre. I was so frightened by the giant octopus that I peed in my pants. Then there was bingo night. My mother had a china closet full of cheap carnival glass from the Rialto. It was 10 cents to get in. I saved my money, pennies, all week for the Saturday matinee. Parents didn't hang around, they just dropped there kids off in front at 12 PM, and didn't worry about it. Long gone days.

Aw the Avon Theatre. Remember the Uptown Theatre all that is left it the Stanley Theatre. Last movie I saw in Utica was Jaws! The very last movie I saw was in Richmond Virginia called Casablanca. Aired in an old movie theatre that was restored to its original beauty. Fantastic. I have seen Casablanca about five times I just love it.....

I loved the Avon. I used to go just about every Saturday to the cartoons and matinee. A half a buck would get you into the movie and buy popcorn and a small soda. We used to bring our own snacks in the winter when we could hide them under our coats. Usually candy bars and bags of chips or popcorn.

The kids today are missing it all with their head buried in cell phones and tablets and machines to play games on.

PS. The James Street theatre which was converted to a Synagogue then a senior citizen center was demolished to make room for something else. Not sure but that area might be the site for the apartment complex that is being built for that area of Cornhill which is seriously needed. West Utica is also getting one near the site of the Erie Canal.

Along with other price pressures, the actors and writers guilds both signed expensive contracts after strikes. I think there will now be a bigger movement to make movies and TV shows in other countries. I can't say that Barb and I never go to the movies anymore, but when we do it is not a casual event.

I used to enjoy the movies that are shown at MUNSON but a few years back the price really increased. To get the member price one needs to be a member of the museum by buying a prescription. I used to do that every year for several years especially when I was working. That price has increased plus the savings you get using the members price for a movie is minimal. www.munson.art/performing-arts/filmsTICKETS: General Public $9 | Members $7 | Students $5 | Pratt Munson Students Free Memberships Individual $50 / Student $25 (with valid ID) This is the one I always joined. Household $85 Contributor $150 Patron $250 President's Circle $500 Fountain Elms: Heritage $1,000 Fountain Elms: Munson $2,500 Fountain Elms: Williams $5,000 Fountain Elms: Proctor $10,000

Can anyone name all the theatres? The Avon, The Hamilton, 258 Cinema, Rialto, Uptown, Stanley...I think I missed quite a few... I enjoy reading all the comments but can't reply to them all. I am sorry. I have been ill for quite few days and am currently finishing up a very detailed painting. I took some photos from the 7th floor of the Wynn and they are spectacular.

I don't think the prices are bad considering it's central and you don't have to spend hours on a bus to get to the multiplex or drive and fight the traffic. Sometimes the movies are not to my taste, but Munson's seems to have no problem filling up the seats.

West Utica is also getting one near the site of the Erie Canal. I think it will be several years before we see any movement on those projects. I don't see how they will do it without taking down both residential and commercial residences. The synagouge is already down, but the West Utica project... theyre's a lot of properties down there, unless they are putting it farther up Whitesboro St where the old coal yards were, I understand it will be on Columbia Square...that area is pretty densely populated.

There was the Utica Theater downtown, a theater just off Oneida Square on Oneida Street a theater between Rutger and Court near where Rutger crosses Albany St. That one ended up showing questionable semi-porn, the Olympic, and the Highland. There was also a theater on Genesee just South of the Rt 8 bridge on t he right side of the street as you were going South. There were also multi screen theaters in both the Riverside Mall as well as Sangertown.
