OMG! It is snowmageddon for sure! Stock up your bread, milk, and toilet paper supply. Charge up your cell phones and tablets, break out the candles and kerosene lamps. We are getting 5 inches of snow and the entire area is in panic mode. By two o'clock this afternoon the schools were already calling in closed for tomorrow. I got the call that bowling is cancelled for tomorrow. Warming centers are opening and activities are being cancelled left and right.
I went to CVS to pick up a prescription for Kathy this afternoon. It is 3 miles up the road. I got stuck following a car with it's four way flashers on, doing less than 20mph. 3 miles, 3 cars in the weeds and ditches. One woman must have been sailing. There were tracks in the slush where she had slid sideways down over a bank and probably 30 yards across someone's lawn. Local police were advising people to stay off the roads and avoid travel. These clowns don't have a clue as to how to drive under winter conditions. It is like bumper cars when it snows here.
The six o'clock news said that this 5 inch accumulation is the first "major" snowfall in 5 yrs. Major? What would they do if they had to endure the normal amount of lake effect snow that we were always accustomed to in upstate NY? It is tapering off to flurries and the snow will be out of here mid morning tomorrow.

Oh, Dear! 'If you go out, don't forget to bring a blanket, a shovel, snacks, bottled water, your meds, ice melt, let someone know where you're going, a flashlight, snow melt, extra clothes, cash, fill your gas tank, layer up etc etc etc etc etc etc! Be be carefull out there!'
We're getting 6 inches in the Mohawk Valley. Then we have this idiot governer who cancels a football game in Buffalo of all places because of a storm & holds a news conference warning of the coming catastrophe.
We're doomed.

I could not believe what I heard on the news. That stadium is paying people who want to shovel out the snow $40.00/hour. Not bad for a days work.

We got blasted with 5 inches of snow and it was followed by a freezing misty drizzle that saturated the snow and froze everything solid. It was zero this morning and all we had was the emergency heat mode from the heat pump. A couple of electric heating coils in the duct work. Thank goodness there was no damage to any components and it was easily remedied. Everything is still frozen solid around here. The heat pump guy parked in the driveway and as he was getting out of his truck it simply slid back down the driveway.
Tomorrow I will be building a fire in the woodstove and will fabricate a shelter to keep the ice and snow from getting down into the heat pump. Four legs and a slightly pitched plywood roof about 1 foot above the condenser and fan unit with lattice panels on four sides for adequate ventilation.
The woodstove will be cranking hot just to keep the chill to a minimum. It is expected to be zero and below again tomorrow morning.
I had to laugh at the Southern snow storm paranoia. I went to the bank and there was a sign on the door. "closed for inclement weather will reopen on Thursday." The roads are all bare and dry. Who closes a business for three days for a one day 5 inch snow? LOL

I think that here in the South even an undertaker would close due to inclement weather( 3 or 4 inches of snow) If ya call them the will tell ya that they will be by to pick up the body some day next week.

An On-line friend who lives in Ontario complained to me yesterday that his beer was slushy. I suppose I could point out to him that like distillation, freezing can increase the alcohol content.

We had about another half inch of snow during the night. I heard the plow go by 3 times during the night. If they go by again it will probably be to scrape the excess salt off the road. By mid February they will be whining that they are running short on salt. I finished the sheltering structure over the heat pump last night by the light of a camping lantern because they were forecasting more freezing rain and snow. It turned out to be next to nothing. It is going to get colder as the day goes on and will be down to zero on Saturday before a gradual warming trend has it back into the 50s and possible 60 by Wednesday or Thursday next week.

Son Michael and Grandson Tom picked us at the airport yesterday. They came in our car which was fine with me; our gas and Thruway card puss more room for luggage. When we go home we found that they had also cleared the driveway which was great.
Growing up in Minnesota, I always had a winter emergency kit for the car. Small snow shovel, food, boots and winter coat unless I was wearing them.
