The Catholic Church made their own bed. Not only in this case & others with the sexual abuse allegations. What ledership did in those coverups is a disgrace to put it mildly.
I was raised Catholic & attended a Catholic grammar school for 8 years. The nuns who taught me, practically every single one of them were bitter miserable human beings. And I wouldn't give one of them the time of day. They actually wanted me to attend a Catholic H.S? Don't think so!

I was raised catholic until I was a teen. My dad was Catholic, my mother was episcopal and I went from there to a Methodist Church of MY choice. No one threatening me with purgatory and hell and repetitious prayer. Every follower of Christianity should know Jesus Christ as their savior and whatever doctrine or religious affiliation they choose to follow in a pursuit of "eternal life" should be a personal decision.
I am not surprised to hear of the Cardinal's criminal behavior. Catholic clergy are human an subject to have a penchant for sin of one sort or another. The young priest that taught me catechism and for whom I had the utmost respect at the time, showed up many years later as one of the predatory pervs that were outed in a list in the OD. Every damned one of those priests should have been prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and should be registered sex offenders for the rest of their days.
If I were still a Catholic and was still raising children, I would NEVER allow my child to be alone behind closed doors with a Catholic clergyman. All those innocent children that were exposed to the sickos will be scarred for life while most of the offenders have moved on with little or no consequence, with their asses covered by the church, the diocese, or in some cases, the Vatican.
I respect and love many Catholics and respect their devotion to God and the church. It is simply not a doctrine that I believe in or wish to follow.

The major reason why the sexual abuse to minors by Priests or Nuns or Brothers was never brought to the public is because of the extreme scandal that would be caused and subsequent loss of Catholics. What the Church feared the most came true.
