We have a tree service coming this morning to give us an estimate on taking down another of the huge trees that could potentially fall on the house and kill us in our beds.
This tree is a huge pin oak tree that is probably 60+ feet tall and only about 20 feet from the house. The trunk is over 3 feet in diameter. We were surrounded trees when we bought the house, with no thought to the fact that they would become a serious threat to the house and our lives.
UPDATE! Our tree guy came by and gave us an estimate of $2400 due to the fact that the location would require all the work to be done by climbing and roping each and every piece down to the ground because of the neighbor's fence and some landscaping in the area, as well as it being over electric and cable drop, and only about 20 feet from the house. He said that with those factors given the job would most likely not be able to be completed in one workday.
He is a real honest guy who took down the big walnut tree in the back yard a year ago. His honest assessment was that the tree is perfectly health, and probably could withstand a has a great root system, well anchored stump, and unless limbs start dying he said if it were his tree he wouldn't take it down and that it is big enough at this point that the $2400 price won't change much due to size if we wait.
He also said that if we ever need firewood to just come to his place and pick it up for free. His crews cut the wood into blocks and he has 4 20ton log splitters on site and all you have to do is bring someone to help split it with one of his splitters and to load it.
