www.wjhl.com/news/local/harlan-co-ky-man-killed-by-bee-swarm-attack-coroners-office-says/Wow. This article hits close to home. I am allergic to honey bee stings and had an anaphylactic reaction back in the 80s. It happens that just today I was clearing the carport out to store my sister and brother in-law's camping trailer for them and moved several bags of potting soil and mulch to the old store building. They had been sitting on a picnic table bench most of the summer. I have been stung by wasps since then with no adverse reactions but my doctor told me to keep Benedryl on hand and if stung and beginning to become symptomatic I should take 5 or 6 Benedryl tablets and go to the ER, just in case. We keep Benedryl in the house, in the motorhome and in the car. I suppose I should just see and allergy doc and do the de-sensitizing procedure. The fact that the swarm that killed the man was nesting in a bag of dirt tells me that it was probably yellow jackets and those damned things swarm and attack. I got into a nest under a tree stump once several years ago and they chased me all the way to the house and stung me several times. I waited until after dark and poured about a quart of gasoline down the hole and lit it.

Just today I was picking some longhots in the garden & bees were hitting on the plants that have blossoms. Didn't get stung once.

We have been fortunate in that we have plenty of honey bees, bumble bees, and carpenter bees that pollinate our plants. I have traps for the carpenter bees but they DO show up pollinating plants in the garden.
We have several different kinds of wasps. Blue, red, black, and yellow jackets. I don't swat at them and they just go about their business. For several years after the allergic reaction I was paranoid as hell if a bee came anywhere near me but I don't pay any attention to having one flying around me anymore as long as it is not a yellow jacket.
