I was mowing the grass along the creek across road and out of the weeds to the side of the mowed portion came a copperhead snake about 2 feet long. I just shifted the mower into a higher gear and ran over it, picked it up with a stick and flung it across the creek into the rubble mess that Asplundh Tree Service left behind.
Copperheads are fairly common here but I have only encountered two of them in the 20+ yrs we have lived here. That is the reason I keep the brush and weeds cut back in the hedge rows that border our property. the first was about that same size and struck at me while I was weed whacking along the hedge row. Gardening tip of the day: a weed whacker will make short work of a snake.
I just use snake repellent balls around places where they may care to hang out around the yard. I toss a few under the pallets of firewood and around the old store building in back, just to keep them away from the area where the dog might encounter one, get curious and get bit.
