Hey, if anyone can help me out here, I'd be very appreciative.
My firefox 3 has stopped working. I tried to uninstall it so I could reinstall it, but I keep getting a message saying that I need to close it before I can uninstall it. Problem is, it's not open! I then decided to just download a new version of it using IE. IE keeps stopping...can't download anything. On top of that, my AVG keeps telling me I don't have enough memory to update my virus definitions. However, I rarely put anything on the laptop, and I have enough memory. So I tried to download a new AVG and the same thing happened with IE...it shut down! This is frustrating, and I'm not sure what to do. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.

Hi Kim, first of all, reboot. That's something that those of us with laptops don't do enough, because laptops have the ability to go to sleep. The reboot SHOULD reset everything. If Firefox for some reason is still up, when you try to uninstall it, do the following.
CTL-ALT-DELETE and you will either bring up Windows Task Manager or a panel that allows you to choose it. Once Task Manager is up, click on the "Processes" tab, click "Image Name" to sort them into alphabetical order. Find firefox.exe and RIGHT click it, then click "end process." Say yes when it asks if you're sure.
I have seen FIrefox stay up after ending it, and have often done this to kill it.

I've been PMing her Dave, got her doing the same thing, but I did forget the process part of TM.
She is running the new AVG Ver.8. When I tried it, it gummed up my browsers and Outlook like glue.

Guess I'm glad I went from AVG to Avast. It doesn't seem to leak memory.

I've used Doctor Solomon's Anti Virus which was the best around at the time. It came from Israel but unfortunately sold out as did McAfee and the others. All anti-virus was owned by a British Company not long ago. I can't begin to tell you how many computers I've worked on that had Norton AV installed and the virus had replicated itself into Norton.exe so that it never found any virus because it was a virus.
I have to defend AVG. I've used it ever since it was conceived, without any problem at all. Until recently I've spent most of my computer time in the most dangerous parts of the Internet. News Groups and Hacks and Cracks 4 computers 24-7. The thing is that you have to have your updated turned on and run a complete scan once and awhile. Scan mail 'before' you read it. Scan Files before you run them.
Most Virus writers know the best way to spread a virus is to write it for the Operating System that is most popular. They also have an axe to grind with MicroSoft many of them being laid off or fired after the New OS was completed. I.E. and Outlook have holes and back doors that are put in them so MS can get in at will. Programmers find the back doors use them and write their virus to attack your computer through them.
I use AVG and The Bat for E-Mail with no problems.
AVG is not the problem.

Yes, I've never liked Norton. Hated it, in fact. I never had a problem with AVG that I remember. I installed it after getting fed up with McAfee. I moved to Avast on someone else's recommendation. You're right, I don't know that AVG caused Kim's memory problem, or even if there was a memory problem. I use Thunderbird for mail.

My email is web-based...even my roadrunner account I check via the web. I never liked outlook all that much and always preferred just reading on the web. I tried the re-boot last night and still had problems, but I'm going to turn the laptop back on in a few minutes and see what I can do. Right now I'm using my desktop, which has AVG, and it's working ok. I hope my laptop will start working ok, too...I use that a lot.
Thanks for the replies!
