I'm surprised at the number of people who eat pizza everyday for lunch even supper. I know some people who eat pizza for lunch and supper everyday especially seniors on fixed incomes. I avoid pizza although I did buy a slice of tomato pie at Slocum Dickson last year.

We only eat pizza about every other month or so. Mainly due to the fact that once you have had upstate NY pizza the pizza from the major pizza chains sucks. We have discovered a couple of family operated pizza places that make a great pizza but they are too far away for take-out. I am not about to drive 8 or 10 miles for a take-out pizza that will be cold and soggy by the time I get it home.
Many times when we want a pizza I buy a "bake at home" store made cheese pizza at Food City, bring it home and put our own toppings on it, such as pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushrooms, and plenty of REAL mozzarella. Then Kathy puts more sauce on top after it is baked to make it a "Utica style" pie. We buy Rao's brand pizza sauce at Kroger and it actually quite thick, sweet and good.
When I want pizza I want it with plenty of toppings piled on. When we order pizza out I always order extra cheese and double orders of other toppings.

My department head at Kennedy Jr High School always stayed after school until 7PM. He was a very very dedicated man. He loved pizza and ordered one every night. His favorite was loaded with everything sausage, meatballs, peppers, onions, black olives( which I love on pizza/ When it came time to do a total makeover that the State demanded to all schools that has biological or chemical supplies it took him and I a week to work on the new chemical storage units and to also prepare old supplies for disposal we had pizza every night. It was just amazing but at least I did not have to cook.I feel so sorry for him because he had crones disease and when he retired from teaching a year later died.

Kathy is a bit choosey when it comes to what toppings she will eat. I love an "everything" pizza with olives, onions, anchovies and the works. They don't put anchovies on pizza here but they do sell them in a can at Krogers so I always have some around for pizza, Ceasar's salad or for an antipasto. I love the salty little buggers.

One of the favorites of many people here in the Utica area is the 'Upside Down' pizza served for many many years at the original O'Scugnizzo's on Bleecker St. and its satellites. It can be topped with anything you like (except, I think, ham and pineapple which is strongly discouraged by the Italians).
A fellow who worked at the original O'Scugnizzo's opened a satellite O'Scugnizzo's in Washington Mills. It was very popular for quite a while but then sales dwindled and it finally closed. The fellow then opened a place called "Oh Baby's" less than 1/4 mile away that made their pizza exactly like O'Scugnizzo's did. Their business boomed. Later, in addition to pizza they started serving various sandwiches made with focaccia bread, which also became very popular. Their slogan was "Gotcha Focaccia?". Focaccia sandwiches became so popular that they finally phased out the pizza, which I think was their downfall. Enough people loved their pizza, which they could no longer get there, and business started falling off. There was not enough focaccia sandwich business to sustain them and they finally closed. Now, when I want my favorite Upside Down pizza I have to go downtown to the original O'Scugnizzo's to get it. There are many other pizzarias in the area that many people swear by, which is good. But for those of us that like Upside Down pizza... O'Scugnizzo's is the best.
I don't make pizza at home. I've tried several times and they're never as good as one made in a real pizza oven by someone with the proper knowledge and ingredients. So I don't mind a bit of a drive and paying for a pizza. I usually eat it there and not have to bring it home and possibly spill it in my car, or worry about whether it has a plastic table or a dough ball in the middle of the cardboard box. To me it's well worth it.

We order upside down pizza occasionally, but imho O's is just not consisent so we order from Joe's in Whitesboro which is the same thing & the owners & employees do not have an attitude. They also offer a take at home, everything is included & you bake it in your oven. It's just as good if you want to order it ahead of time.
As far as quality we ordered from Tony's in New Hartford recently & I've had better pizza from a freezer at the gocery store. Never again.

Every once in awhile Im wishing for a slice but its gotten so pricey. All it is , is bread with some sauce on it. I dont need to spend 30.00 for a taste of pizza. Way too expensive. And none compare to the ones Ive had back in Utica.
