First I love self checkout. It is fast and I can arrange my groceries in my shopping job the way I like and not be rushed by some cashier. However yesterday as I was checking out at New Hartford store I noticed that I was being filmed as I used the machine; Upper right hand corner had a screen with me packaging. I really do not care but it surprised me. Today the machine I used was not filming!!! I wonder why.

It is common for retailors to have cameras monitors customers at self checkout. This one just gives you a reminder that Big Brother is watching you. (I gotta get my grandkids to read 1984.)

It should be required reading in every classroon in the Country. Aldi's has also followed suit with the the other greed mongers installing self checkouts. Mark my words next they'll have robots stocking shelves in WM & the rest of them.

They're only to remind you to do the right thing, I guess. We can't monitor them, and they are not being recorded. The older ones had cams and the monitors were separate up on the register, you just might not have paid any attention to them. But each SCO (self check out) bullpen has wide angels cams monitoring them from the front and the back, as well as the gun cams above every. single. checkout..........manned or not. AND they are ALL recording, all the time. And if we think you are doing the bad thing, we will use our PTZ's to zoom in on you from at least two different angles, And in N. Utica, they're so good we can read the text messages on your phone if you hold it still.

Aldi stores are staffed by a minimum number of people who stay busy stocking shelves, unloading trucks as well as manning a checkout line when the line starts to back up at the manned checkouts. I have used the self checkout only twice when I only had one item to purchase. I have yet to spend more than 5 or 10 minutes checking out with a live cashier. They have multiple bar codes on their packaging that allow for rapid scanning and they are very efficient in scanning an entire cart full of groceries in a very short time. I find myself shopping at Aldi's more and more as time goes by and prices go up in other supermarkets.
