wcyb.com/news/local/viewer-photos-severe-thunderstorms-rolled-through-the-tri-cities-area-saturday?photo=1Fast moving is an understatement. I heard thunder in the distance so I went out to put the car under the carport. I could see the dark clouds moving toward us. Within seconds the wind kicked up, trees started to bend, large drops of rain started to spatter on the driveway, and just as I got out of the car a bolt of chain lightning struck somewhere close enough for the crack to be deafening, and instantaneous and close enough that I could smell ozone. The wind gusted at probably 40 or 50 mph for only about five minutes, and the torrential downpour lasted only a few minutes after that. We didn't have any damage but the creek across the road came over it's banks, washed some of the debris mess that Asplund left behind down the creek and plugged a culvert, which sent the water over the road. It was quite a light show and the storm ended as quickly as it began. Needless to say the nearby lightning bolt scared the crap out of me and sent me skittering for the house. I feel badly for those in the Northeast that experienced the major flooding such as what they saw in Vermont. How bad did it get in the CNY area? I saw a photo on FB of some pretty substantial flooding on streets in Ilion. We are going to get a brief respite from the low to mid 90s today. Our high is only going to be around 82.

We are having a very nice cool day up here. At 2PM it is 72 degrees very low humidity and dew point. Refreshing. That had to be some storm you described Clipper. Sounds scary just like Dorothy had in Kansas and you know what happened after that.

The severe summer storms are the price we pay for the mild winters I suppose. It is not unusual here to have alerts for 60mph winds and quite often the winds reach 40+. We sometimes get down sloping winds off the mountains to both the East and West. Sometimes living in a hollow protects us from the wind, and other times it funnels the winds and when they come from the right direction they get scary with the tall trees around us. One by one we are eliminating the trees but it costs a couple grand to take one down. The cheapest we have paid was for the Walnut tree in the back yard. It was an easy job for them because they could back the chipper and bucket truck right up to the base of the tree. The guy charged us $1800. I get nervous when I see the tops of the trees bending like a fly rod.
It is only 74 right now and a gentle breeze is blowing. I have been working in the garage with the doors open. A real difference from the ninety degree days we have been having.

Back to more seasonable weather and temperatures. 84 degrees is warm but bearable after the mid nineties. We had a severe thunderstorm roll through downpout, followed by several periods of drizzle. The garden was thirsty. The wind and heavy rain from the severe thunderstorm broke down some of the branches on my overly tall tomato plants. The plants are beyond a point where they can be tied up and they are loaded with clumps of tomatoes as big as baseballs. I planted Better Boys just as I have for the past few years but for some reason they exploded and grew to 5 feet and more, and the tomatoes are in clumps of 3 and 4. They are slow in turning red though. I have only found 3 or 4 each day that are red. They will probably all turn at the same time which will be good for the purposes of canning.

My Aunt who moved to Orlando FL used to say she will take the hurricanes etc over snow, freezing temps and winter coats and boots. My Uncle on the other hand was laid back and didn't care where he lived.

I was at a friend's camp this weekend & the temps/humidity were brutal Friday, the heat index had to be close to 100*. Saturday it cooled off but rained nonstop for half the day. We went out on his boat to Fish Creek & nothing we threw at the them could get them to bite other then a couple panfish & small perch. The Bimini top saved us from a soaking but it was good to get put of the city for a couple days.

It is a great day for goofing off. I already picked some tomatoes out of the garden and sprayed the grass coming up in the cracks of the patio brick sidewalk. It is a nice day and I am taking a day off from the usual routine work around the house and yard.
I am going to meet friends and bowl a few games at 12:30 and then later Kathy and I are going to the casino to play the machines for a while and then eat dinner on our comp points and a $10 food credit that we each received in the mail. We each have $25 free play.

Almost. We haven't been lucky the last few times we went. We have been taking $100 apiece and our free play and have lost it within a couple of hours. This time I hit a jackpot for $1710 and an hour later Kathy hit a jackpot for $1140. Kathy's winnings will pay the $1100 we spent on the hotel for our vacation.
We don't spend big and we don't expect to come out ahead every time we go. We just really enjoy playing the slot machines and we always have played enough to have free play coming to us and a $10 food credit each so we have a nice meal in the restaurant. As long as we know enough to leave if we lose our $100 all is well. I hit the jackpot on only a 75 cent bet minimum bet. Kathy was betting $1 on the machine that she hit on.
Usually the machines let you play and pay often enough to keep you playing. It goes up and down. Usually if I double my money I go cash out and put another $100 bill in the machine and start over.

Not a bad score at all for you guys. Congrats.
