Another day of high humidity and 91 degrees today. I was out working around the yard and garden at 7am today. Worked until 9:30.
PB, stay hydrated during your daily travels today. The heat got to me the other day and I felt like crap for the rest of the day. Now I drink my juice and a coffee before I go out and I take a bottle of water with me. Yesterday on my way to the bank I encountered an elderly gentleman sitting on one of those walkers with a seat, surrounded by a tote full of clothes, a knapsack, and a little cart with an oxygen tank on it. He had a sign that said he needed a ride to the VA Hospital in Johnson City. His car had broken down in Glade Spring, about 30 miles North of here and he had gotten a ride to Bristol with someone going to work. He was on his way to the VA to have back surgery today. He was heavy set hot and sweating profusely so we stopped at a gas station and I bought him a bottle of water. He had been sitting on the street corner on his walker for over an hour in the heat. He also had a Vietnam Veteran US Navy cap on so i called Kathy and told her I was taking him to JC to the VA. The first thing I did was stop at McDonald's and buy us each an Egg McMuffin and coffee and then we were off to the VA. His oxygen tank was running low and he suffered from COPD. I grabbed a wheel chair and wheeled him into the ER simply because of the oxygen situation, and toted his stuff in there. He gave me his car keys so I could get another knapsack out of the with his shaving gear and clean underwear in it. I am going to pick it up this afternoon and take it to him. the poor guy lives in a rented old mobile home and is estranged from his family because he is an alcoholic.
His car has a blown radiator hose and is parked in a truck stop parking lot. I may see if I can get a friend to help me replace the hose, and follow me to Johnson City so I can take his car to him so he has a way home to Marion Va when he gets out of the hospital. He will probably be housed in the domiciliary at the VA until he is well enough to drive and care for himself. He used my phone to call the VA and let them know what was going on and why he was running late for his pre-op appointment and admission. I am grateful to the Lord for putting me in the right place at the right time to help a fellow veteran in need. I will check on him later today after he has had the surgery and see if he needs anything. I feel blessed to have all that I need, and have the time and money to be able to help someone. It is an advantage of being retired I guess. I am always trying to keep busy and being able to help someone like this is very rewarding. It will cost me no more than about $20 worth of gas and a few hours of my time. I have actually been going to check into volunteering to drive the golf cart shuttles at the Bristol hospital that shuttle people between the hospital entrances and the parking areas.
Heading out to get his stuff and take it to him. It is 83 already and getting hotter by the minute.
