cnysnakepitlives.blogspot.com/2008/09/hanna-online_04.htmlI agree with Gear 100%. CNYHomepage.com has become one of my first sites to visit for news. They are doing a great job and have openly linked to blogs and real community views. During last week's debate on the FBO at the airport, on the floor of the legislature, Mike Hennessy even mentioned the CNYHomepage website.

They're doing a heck of a job filling in the gaps left by what passes for the local media.
The only reason Mr. Roefaro's failure to meet his own deadline for the Hotel Utica situation was addressed by either the OD or WKTV is because CNY Homepage followed up on the story. I like to think I had some small part with that, but I'm just happy that the issue is getting some coverage.
Ideally, both they and I would like to see a lot more local people get involved with citizen journalism. Your videos are a step in the right direction, and I hope that great examples like Strikeslip and New Hartford Online help to inspire more people to dip their toes in the water. We're suffering from a massive news deficit in the Utica/Rome area because of staff cutbacks and editorial mismanagement at almost every local media outlet. The more people that participate, via blogs, messageboards, or homemade videos, the better.

You hit the nail on the head, Gear. We can't sit back and wait for our local media to be the watchdogs that they are supposed to be. For whatever reason (and there's much speculation), the OD and WKTV simply don't believe in real investigative reporting or possibly writing a story that may upset the wrong powerbroker. So we have to take back our area on our own. Fortunately, the internet is allowing our voices to reach the masses. Our area is way behind others in the internet news sites, but we are catching up. It's all about that wonderful thing called the "1st Amendment" and no longer is it reserved for those in the Ivory Tower on Oriskany Street.

Sometimes I wish I lived in Utica so I could kvetch. But then again, what happens in Utica spills over onto us here in Schuyler, so maybe I should.

Are you saying we are habitual complainers? I think it is very Democratic to be able to speak out against your government. As Ronald Reagan said, "Government is not the answer, government is the problem." Around here, the media is probably just as liable due to their failure to consistently act as watchdogs against this abuse.

Hell no, Larry. I'm just saying I'd LIKE to complain about Utica/Oneida Co. stuff but feel I have no right because I don't live there.
I think you're doing great!! Keep it up...

I see. Well then, jump right in because a lot of the mistakes being made here are completely affecting Herkimer County (think water, annexation, etc.). We could use another voice.

It's time for everyone to start thinking regionally. That means kvetching even if you don't live somewhere.

1. Stoney, Schuyler is close enough to Utica, you can chime in all you want! In fact I encourage you to do so. The more voices heard the more likely they'll listen.
2. I don't have the readership on my blog to make it worth my while to post stories about local bs.
3. Even if I did, I don't have the time at this point to post much.
4. I prefer being behind the scenes filing FOIL requests, serving Notices of Claims, and petitioning for Article 78 hearings. It's amazing what happens when you have "Esq." after your name and you know what you're talking about in terms of the law.
5. I reckon I've already gotten to donna because she's been deleting all my posts on the od pages about new hartford, e.g. the cop stalking a town resident, the town clerk lying about the non-existence of certain records that in fact do exist (i've seen them), the town supervisor eluding to having extra influence of our honorable DA, the town highway superintendent not submitting a letter of retirement as mandated by law, the school board illegally funding a business park, etc.
6. donna sent me an e-mail. I have not read it because I'm sure it will go along the lines of something about how they don't publish articles that have no foundation in fact. Too bad she is too stupid to know what investigative reporting is. If she does, then she's too stupid to understand English because the facts are right in front of her!
7. I am in the process of writing a very detailed letter about donna's inability to properly report the news, including how there is a complete lack of accurate or balanced reporting of ANYTHING.
8. I encourage others to write to GateHouse Media, Inc., 350 Willowbrook Office Park, Fairport, NY 14450
9. Read up on Strikeslip's, Gear's, and Concerned Citizens's blogs. They are very informative and well supported by fact. It's the news donna and other government officials do NOT want you to know!
10. I like round numbers and can't think of anything of substance to add for 10, so I'll just end here with this...
Mess with the bull, get the horns!

Hey Stoney, look at where I'm living currently, and I've got no problem with giving my opinion. Of course, I've been deemed an a**hole by many friends and relatives.

I agree that the stuff that happens in Utica/Oneida Co. spills over onto us. Now if I could only collect some of this cow waste & spill it back...

I agree that the stuff that happens in Utica/Oneida Co. spills over onto us. Now if I could only collect some of this cow waste & spill it back... In the case of sewage, Oneida County sends an average of just under a million gallons of human waste your way via the Mohawk River every day. I think that's enough to justify kvetching.

Larry: "We could use another voice. "I used to be involved with everything back when I had the energy & was full of piss & vinegar. Now that my M.S. has gotten worse I just don't have it in me anymore... I can certainly understand that, Stoney. I hope all is well and wish you the absolute best. I know you have been an active voice for a long time. We used to have some great discussions a few years ago. Just as a heads up to you and your Herkimer County neighbors...I did vote "NO" to the annexation of Masonic Care. Unfortunately, I was the only one on the Board to do so. I still can't understand why Utica or Oneida County has any interest in that, even know they will all say "we stayed neutral." I wish Herkiner County would annex Utica, then maybe we could enjoy lower taxes. What a mess our "leaders" have created over the last couple decades. The original settlers of this region must be rolling over in their graves.

Larry, I used to be the secretary of the West Utica Democratic Club way back when Harry Hertline was president, before he was on the legislature. I had a really big mouth back then; Dick Emmert was my mentor & adviser at U.C. Is Dick still the pres of OC Democratic committee?
