There is a right of way along one side of our property for utility lines to reach the house on the hill behind us. We had a huge maple tree that grew up into the lines, causing problems a couple of times over the years and even setting the tree on fire once when the wind caused branches to chafe the primary lines. There was also a sycamore tree on the back property line that had grown all around a pole with a transformer on it.
Asplundh Tree Service showed up here this morning and were going cut limbs away from the lines. I recently found out from a guy that works for the power company that if a tree's base in within 12 feet of a point directly below the lines, I could request that they take the entire tree down. I requested that they take it down. A big shot from the power company came out and looked at the situation, and approved my request. I sat in a lawn chair and watched as they took it down using a climber with gaffs, safety belt, and ropes. The guy took it down piece by piece like a well trained surgeon. They also dropped the sycamore tree and cut it up.
Asplundh puts everything that they can through the chipper, but the larger limbs are cut into firewood sized blocks and are left. They gave me a card with a number to call at the power company who will in turn send a crew out to remove the blocks if I so desire. I am debating whether I want to have them come back and get it, or do I want to split it all, pile it, and sell it. There is probably another 4 face cords to add to the 4 face cords or so of walnut that I split and piled last fall. Some of the blocks probably weigh 50 or 60 lbs. With weather expected to get near 90 degrees in the near future I am leaning toward just having them come and clean it up. I am getting too old to be splitting and piling firewood in the 90 degree heat.
