I just came from the nursery with new butternut squash plants, two rolls of weed cloth, and the spikes to secure it to the ground with. I am going to put down the weed cloth and then spread straw on top of it to help hold moisture. Their squash plants don't look a whole lot better than the ones that Kathy grew from seed. If these croak we are going to buy our squash in the fall, and I am going to plant broccoli and cabbage.

Tomorrow I'm going to pick up a bale of straw from Lowe's or HD & lay that down to keep down the weeds. I figure it will hold in moisture also so I won't have to water as much. We need rain up here big time & there's none in sight. I've had to water the garden just about every day since I planted. The grass in our backyard is already turning brown.
Broke down & bought a 50 ft garden hose today when the old one gave up the ghost. So much for the Yankee fix. Lol

My cobble jobs usually involve hose clamps, duct tape, or wire ties and electrical tape. LOL!
I am going to buy another 50 feet of good hose the next time I go out.

The hose we bought last year is still leak free thankfully. The house foundation, sidewalks and patio area have all been pressure washed. Barb went out this morning to use the leaf blower to blow maple seeds off the sidewalks, driveway and patio. I think that is a useless task, they will all be covered again by dinner time. Looks like a nice day today.

The joys of spring. First we get the maple seeds and buds all over, and then the green pine pollin takes over just to make sure that I rinse the car and motorhome and wash the sidewalk so as not to bring the allergens into the house. We both live on OTC allergy products this time of year. Pollen allergies is the gift that keeps on giving.

The price for a bale of Pennington straw has just about doubled at Lowe's to almost $18 so I didn't buy it. I went out this morning, mixed up some Miracle Gro for tomatoes & fertilized the plants & yanked out a few weeds. It's 85* right now & this is the longest stretch of sunny weather that we've had in a long time.
We also have maple seeds all over the place here from neighbor's tree. I went thru the drive thru car wash yesterday & the truck is already green from the pollen.

BHU place newspapers down around the plants you can experiment with the thickness needed. I do not think the news print ink should have any effect on the plants.

News print won't hurt them anymore. The ink they use now is soy based.

I have used it around the rose bushes. I layed down about 3 layers or so, soaked it good with the hose and then spread the decorative bark mulch on top of it. I have never used it in the vegetable garden. I am not so sure how it would hold up to frequent foot traffic.

I guess my crops will not improve this year. I was laying down landscape cloth to day until the temperature hit 91. It was a beautiful day, but about 6 o'clock a there was a down pour. We were on our way home from dinner out with friends. It rained so hard that I got off the interstate and took the surface streets home because I could not see on I-81. .

If I understand, he is harvesting unwanted plants (plants which are growing where he does not want them) soaking them in water for some length of time to remove soluble nutrients. He then pours the soak water on the desired plants and composts the remainder of the wet lump. Sounds reasonable although time consuming.

All you need is a bag of compost, an aquariom pump & plastic tubing to provide aeration, water & a 5 gal. bucket. Takes about a day. I made a batch a couple years ago when I was trying to save our plum tree but it was too late. I may do it again & use it in our garden. Some people swear buy so I think I'll try it.

I had never heard of compost tea. Had to look it up. Sounds like fun but I am pretty sure Barb won't let me set that up in the garage.
