The stumps of the yews were ground out today and Barb is making landscaping plans. Between the area the yews occupied and the sidewalk which runs from the front steps to the driveway is an area about 4 x 12 of lawn. Barb wants the grass removed so that the entire area from the house to the sidewalk can be her floral display. How do I remove the grass?
On a brighter note: the lilacs we planted in the back bloomed this week.

If it was me I would roto-till it, rake out the grass etc then backfill with some good topsoil & level it off. There are chemicals such as Roundup which will kill the grass but I'm sure you want to avoid that. I would sprinkle the area with "Preen" to help keep any weeds from growing.

One lamb would be enough to mow that area. Perhaps I could persuade Barb that instead of decorative landscaping we could fence the area and get 2 pygmy goats with a chihuahua to herd them.

There's a tool for that! I imagine most landscaping folks would have it, not sure on finding one at Lowe's, HD, etc. Some are narrow and some are longer, some motorized. It's just a blade that goes below the grass root level and you pull it/push it and slice off the layer of sod, scoop it/roll it up and get rid of it. Lay down some top soil to level it off and away you go. You can accomplish the same thing with a good sharp flat shovel, but it's a bit of work.

The blade is set just deep enough to cut below the roots and oscillates back and forth in a saw like motion to cut the sod. It actually cuts the sod clean enough that you can roll up the sod and use it somewhere else. I had to go and pick one up for my brother once when he had to cleanly remove sod for his wife to plant a large and elaborate rose garden. I just did a search for "sod cutter for rent, Utica NY area and came up with two possibilities. Home Depot and J.C. Smith Inc. 394 Oriskany Blvd in Whitesboro.
