Well, I had to accept the realization that I am not as young and strong as I was a couple of years ago. I have been working at getting the motor home prepared for the summer. All was going well until I tried to start it to move it to the center of the driveway to make it easier to wash both sides of it without standing in grass. Yup, I got the infamous and feared click, click, click instead of the engine turning over. That would be no big thing seeing as how the battery was beyond the 5 yr life expectancy it was rated for. I put the charger on it for two hours and it wouldn't take a charge. It was when I had the battery disconnected, and was ready to lift it out of the engine compartment, bearing in mind that the cross bar in front of the radiator chest high that I discovered I could not lift it out. The V-10 engine pretty much fills the engine compartment, leaving little room for hands to access anything. After fussing with a ratchet and extension and the ability to only turn the nut on the hold down bracket at the base of the battery for about 15 minutes just to free the battery, I grabbed the battery and tried to lift it out. I am ashamed to admit that I could NOT lift it out. It takes some serious cranking amps and thusly, a substantially large and heavy battery to turn over the V-10 engine. I had to swallow my pride and have my young and fit neighbor come over and lift it out. He also had to come back over and lift the new one in.
The next shock came when I went to Autozone for a replacement. They wanted $189 for a 36 month, 750 amp battery. When shopping for a battery for my truck a couple of years ago, I ended up going to the Rural King Farm Store and paid $72 for a 5 yr battery. I went there yesterday and bought a SEVENTY TWO month, 850 amp battery for $84 and tax. A bigger and better battery for less than half the price.
It is a bright and sunny day today and I am rested and refreshed, ready to make today a bit more productive than yesterday.
