What is going on is that someone didn't adequately secure a loaded handgun. The gunowner is solely responsible for the tragedy. Just plain ignorance and stupidity and now they are mourning the death of a child. Anyone with kids in the house should be using a trigger lock on every weapon and keeping the keys locked up where only the responsible owner can access the keys to them. My boys were never allowed to take out a gun unless under my supervision. I came from work one day and the 14 yr old had been plinking cans with his 22 rifle. From that point on my guns were always locked in a gun cabinet and had trigger locks.
Even though there is only Kathy and I in the house I still have trigger locks on most of my guns and have one for each of my two pistols although one of those is always loaded without a round in the chamber for home defense.

Someday they may figure out a way to keep guns away from idiots & psychopaths instead of plotting to militarize half the population. I like how they're ranting & raving about fentanyl demanding that Biden do more at the border blah blah blah, but kids gunned down in classrooms time after time after time after time with AR's? Crickets or a shrug of the shoulders from the likes of that G.O.P. moron from Tenn. who's probably bought off by the gun lobby. It's a disgrace what's happening.

Even avid gun proponents like myself are shaking our heads in disbelief over the passage of that law. The old line that 18 yr olds fight for the country and carry guns doesn't cut it with me when it comes to handguns.
He has done a lot of good things for Tennessee but he definitely stepped on his peepee with this one. There aren't enough rednecks in the entire state to re-elect him after this move.

Twenty-five years and my life is still Trying to get up that great big hill of hope For a destination And I realized quickly when I knew, I should That the world was made up of this brotherhood of man For whatever that means And so I cry sometimes When I'm lying in bed Just to get it all out What's in my head And I am feeling a little peculiar And so I wake in the morning And I step outside And I take a deep breath and I get real high And I scream at the top of my lungs What's going on? And I say, hey hey, hey hey I said hey, what's going on? Ooh, ooh ooh And I try, oh my God, do I try I try all the time in this institution And I pray, oh my God, do I pray I pray every single day for a revolution And so I cry sometimes When I'm lying in bed Just to get it all out What's in my head And I am feeling a little peculiar And so I wake in the morning And I step outside And I take a deep breath and I get real high And I scream at the top of my lungs What's going on? And I say, hey hey hey hey I said hey, what's going on? Apparently, gun manufacturers haven't been able to sell enough AR type weapons to our military so the plan is to militarize half the U.S. population with these guns. And with the help of half of Washington lawmakers like Lyin Ted & a few others along with a few million $$$ in bribes they're well on their way. The N.R.A., now operated by a band of thieves is also in on the act. It's shamefull.

I would hope you know that there is a big difference between owning guns for personal use and for self defense is a long way from militarizing half the population.

All I know is that there are aporox. 20 million AR's in circulation in the U.S. Included in that numer are 18 yr olds who can't even buy a pack of cigs but can own an AR without any training. I also know what a round from an AR can do to the body of a human being including an 8 yr old cowering in a classroom. Thankfully I've not seen it first hand but I've heard about it more times that I care to remember.

In no way do I mean to minimize the tragedy of the mass shootings, but the focus needs to be on the prevention of the shootings rather than on the weapon used. It is very sad that ANYONE has to die in a mass shooting or a school shooting, but the focus needs to be on the why, not the how. The problem isn't the gun. It is the mental state of the shooter, and the how and why they become so mentally deranged, but the more the focus is placed on the AR-15, the more it becomes misguidedly glorified as the ultimate weapon of choice for those that perpetrate the horrific shootings. AR-15 sales exploded when a weapons ban on them was proposed. Once again, an AR15 is nothing more than a semi-automatic rifle with a military looking stock and configuration. Had there not been such and effort to ban them, it is quite likely that there would have been a much lower number sold. While ARl-15s are demonized as "assault rifles" the rifles being used in the mass shootings are actually a sporting model of the original military version of the Armalite Rifle, later manufactured by Colt. In all actuality, only 4% of firearms related shootings are committed with so called assault rifles. Handguns are used in the majority of firearms related homicides. Gun expert Dean Hazen and mass murder researcher Pete Blair think that mass shooters' gun choices have less to do with the AR-15's specific characteristics but rather with familiarity and a copycat effect.[111][112]
Contrary to popular, yet misguided anti-gun rhetoric, the sporting model AR-15 is quite popular and well suited to hunting. The popularity of the AR-15 as weapon of choice for the mass shootings is driven by the government and media hype, and had anti-gun groups not pushed to ban the simple semi-auto rifle derived from a military design the sales numbers would have probably been small. As far as militarizing the US population, by selling the AR-15, the statistics speak for themselves. How many of those 20 million AR-15s have actually been used to commit homicides or mass shootings? In all actuality more people in the US have probably been shot to death by shotguns and long guns ranging from high powered deer rifles down to the .22 caliber rifles that are used for small game hunting and inexpensive target shooting than with AR-15s.
They are doing the same thing with handguns. When there is an attempt to diminish our rights under the constitution, and limit our right to own a handgun, people swarm to gun shops and apply for carry permits simply to get ahead of any attempt to outlaw ownership. I hadn't had a pistol permit since we left NY, but with the threat of limiting my right to own or legally carry a handgun you can bet I went out and applied for and acquired a carry permit. I bought a pistol and since have bought a second one. People think if you have more than a hundred or so rounds of ammunition, you are a prepper or anti-government nut case that belongs on a watch list. After having the shortage of ammunition during the pandemic and supply chain issues, I maintain about 300 rounds and 100 rounds of 380 ammo, but when I go to the range I burn up a box of 50 rounds with each trip. I only keep one box of each type of long gun ammo for each of my other guns.
I am a gun enthusiast so why don't I own an AR style rifle? Because I refuse to spend 7 or 8 hundred bucks just to own one. With the exception of a loaded 9mm pistol for home defense as well as target shooting, all of my other guns are strictly for recreational shooting and nobody should be allowed to infringe on my right to enjoy that.
