cnycentral.com/news/local/another-tractor-trailer-strikes-csx-bridge-on-onondaga-parkway-photos-here#These incidents have been occurring for as long as I can remember. It just baffles me that there hasn't been a solution after all these years. New York City manages to keep trucks off of Parkways and the ticket issued for offenders is quite pricey. The bridge was built in 1871. I don't know when they started building trucks that were over 10 feet tall, but it seems that engineers have had more than adequate time to come up with a solution.

Might have to do with money but I think it may be cheaper to just lower the road a little so trucks over 10 ft fit!
LOL I think I could be a politician.

The bridge is so close to the lake it may be a water table problem that prevents them from lowering the road. The standard semi-trailer height is 13'6". How about signage that states absolutely no trucks or high-profile vehicles allowed. $500 fine for first offense?
They could possibly do away with the bridge completely and bring the tracks down to grade and install gates and signals. Another solution would be to close the Syracuse end of the parkway and make Onondaga Park accessible only from the Liverpool end.
I remember several years ago a charter bus hit the bridge. I think there was 4 people killed and a number of other passengers injured.

That might not be cheap since the bridge supports appear to be close to the roadway. I can't think of another long term fix. The penalty for hitting the bridge should be more than a fine. It needs to be something more attention getting. Two days in county lock-up and 6 month suspension of CDL would be generate a lot of chatter.

Maybe these trucks can be outfitted with a device that would lower the height of the truck. But I do think a sign that is an attention getter would work along with a hearty fine

That bridge IS a device that lowers the height of trucks. It just does it in a rather crude way. LOL
