About once a month Kathy and I take $100 apiece and go to the casino for the evening. When the $100 is gone we are gone. I have won $850 and $350 over the past 4 months. Last night we ate dinner in the restaurant using some of our comp points before playing.
It must have been our night to win. Kathy soon had almost $200 while I went up and down until my money had dwindled to $30 without hitting anything. All of a sudden the tables turned. I hit $324. I cashed it out and put $100 back in the machine. I cashed out every time that I won a couple of hundred. I went up and down and hovered around 7 or 8 hundred ahead. I finally hit a jackpot for $854. We walked out of there with$1760. I am taking it to the bank this morning. It will pay the $1300 for our hotel when we come to NY in July, plus our gas for the entire vacation.
The temptation for many is to take some of that money and try to win some more. Nope! We will probably go back next month with our $100 each. I have watched people make repeated trips to the ATM machine. We actually leave our debit cards at home and I will be damned if I will take any cash advance on a credit card. We really enjoy playing the slots but even when we lived in NY and went to the Turning Stone, we always limited ourselves and left when our allocated funds were gone. Gambler's Anonymous meetings must be filled with people that chase that dream of a big jackpot while spending their rent and grocery money.

The casino that we have now is only a temporary casino while they build a huge Hard Rock casino. They have now demolished all of the old mall except for the old Penny's location that houses the temporary casino. The steel work for the hotel will begin shortly and they estimate the completion date for the permanent casino and hotel to be in mid 2024. The present gambling area will become a non-smoking area along with a few shops and such.
It sits on a parcel of over 100 acres and will include the hotel, the casino, an outdoor entertainment venue that will accommodate thousands, and a convention center. There are plans in the works to buy more of the surrounding land. Yesterday they were cutting logs off of a wooded parcel behind the casino, to grade it and add 15 more acres of parking. There is a dead end street adjacent to the place that holds several homes at the present time. They are negotiating to buy all those homes and the entire street.

My older son who is very smart (PhD from Cornell in BioChem) accurately describes the Lottery as a tax on dumb people, calls the lottery "a tax on dumb people." I agree but do participate a couple times per year when the Jackpot gets to an outrageous amount.
For many people however it, like alcohol, becomes an addiction. I have trouble with the state promoting it as an economic driver for downtown Utica.

I agree CB. With casinos in both Verona and Vernon, as well as the other Oneida Nation casinos scattered about the area to the West, there is no need for another. Having had my own experience with alcohol addiction many years ago I am very vigilant when it comes to avoiding compulsive behaviors. With all the other casinos in the area it is very doubtful that putting a casino in the city would bring about any economic boom or financial windfall for the city. I think that with Vernon Downs as an example, it has become quite evident that no other casino would compete with the Turning Stone, nor would it bring anything but headaches to a city where people are already struggling financially. The city and the county certainly don't need to go into the casino business. Unlike Turning Stone, although Hard Rock is owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, the casino doesn't sit on sovereign tribal land so they pay taxes and plenty OF them. The casino here will most likely be successful because it will be a destination being as it is directly adjacent to the interstate, just like Turning Stone is, and with all the other activities here that fuel tourism. It is already contributing heavily to both Bristol Va as well as Bristol Tn, and is giving a lot of money to local charities as well. With that being said, even though the temporary casino has only been open since July, I am sure that it has already claimed it's share of those addicted to compulsive gambling. Along with the billboards advertising the casino, there are now several billboards in the area with phone numbers for help for those with a gambling problem.

That's a nice score, congrats!I haven't been in TS in probably close to 10 years. I do go to Vernon Downs once in a while & the last time was this past summer where I lost $60. in less then an hour. I would not be surprised in the OIN builds a casino in the vicinity of the Aud.

We usually do better at TS than at Vernon Downs. We don't often win big at TS, but our money seems to last longer. We go for the entertainment, not to get rich. I have only hit it big on their machines once. About 10 yrs ago I was playing a quarter machine, betting a buck. I hit $2100. I cashed it out and walked to where Kathy was playing. I handed her the wad of bills and watched her shock as she thumbed through 21 $100 bills. I kept $100 of it and walked to a different section and different machine. That was when you had to go to a cage and put the money on your card to play. I figured since I had won so much that I would bet $2 at a time. I pulled the lever twice and on the second pull I hit another $1100. I walked back to where Kathy was playing Keno and handed her THAT wad of bills. Needless to say we grabbed our coats and the coat check and headed for home. When we walk in we don't have any expectations of hitting anything of consequence. We take what we want to spend and e just enjoy the relaxation and the casino atmosphere. When we lived up there we used to travel to Foxwoods and Mohican Sun in Connecticut a couple of times a year. Win or lose we enjoy relaxing and sipping coffee, and enjoying the buffet. Kathy's late brother went once and he won a Chrysler at Mohican Sun on the big giant $1 machine that had a car for a top prize.
